The Bremen Carnival is an annual carnival parade in Bremen that has been held since 1986, followed by a masked ball and a large number of side events. The carnival has been taking place under annually changing mottos since 1991. It is a carnival with an emphasis on samba . Other “pillars” are: masks, costumes, stilts and spectacles. The operator is the “Initiative Bremer Karneval eV”, the initiator and artistic director is the Swiss artist Janine Jaeggi. The Bremen Carnival is considered the largest samba carnival in Europe and almost coincides with the Venice Carnival .

history

The first move took place on February 15, 1986 with a samba group and around 100 participants in the Ostertor district near the former Paulskloster . It was founded by a samba group in Bremen in 1985. The initiators used the archaic idea of winter expulsion and the play of the burgeoning spring forces as the basic motif for the Bremen carnival. These energies are symbolically symbolized by the living arts such as samba, guggen music, masks, costumes, dance, stilts and spectacles. The period from 1986 to 1990 was characterized by the search for and definition of the framework conditions. Originally, the date of the move was set to be the first full moon night in February, with a clear distinction from the Rhenish carnival. However, since the dates could still overlap, the weekend one week before the big Rhenish carnival parades was chosen. In the first few years, the moving locations also changed, until the sixth Carnival in 1991 saw the emergence of today's moving route from the market square in Bremen via Ostertorsteinweg .

The Bremen carnival had only had a fixed and annually changing motto since 1991, when it was discussed against the backdrop of the Second Gulf War to cancel the carnival entirely. Instead, the move was put under the motto “Bubbling up against the war”. A masked ball has also been held in the Schlachthof cultural center since 1992 . The following years were associated with a significant increase in the number of side events and increased professionalism. Entry is required for many events. The carnival season will also be announced publicly on November 11 of the previous year on the Bremen market square, with the respective annual motto being presented.

In 2008, the move included over 150 samba groups with around 2,500 participants and around 30,000 spectators. According to the organizers' website, 109 groups were registered for the 2007 move. The parade ends in a street carnival with different stages and a free play between the actors and the audience.

The participating samba groups come from Bremen and the near and far, but also from the Rhineland, Berlin , Augsburg , Munich or Kiel and neighboring countries such as the Netherlands , Austria and Switzerland.

According to police estimates, 35,000 spectators were present at the parade in 2009, the parade itself had 1,400 participants. In contrast to previous years, the move had already started at 11:11 a.m. The background was a game of the Werder Bremen football club on the same day.

In February 2014 around 1,500 people took part in the samba parade under the motto “Home?”. There were also people from Denmark , the Netherlands , the United Kingdom and Switzerland represented in the over one hundred groups .

Over a hundred groups with 1,000 musicians and 1,200 samba dancers, acrobats and stilt walkers took part in the parade on February 6, 2015. According to police estimates, at least 15,000 people watched the move on Bremen's market square , Domsheide and in the district .
