Fancy dress ball
A costume ball , also a masked ball or costume party , is an event that often takes place during Carnival and Mardi Gras, but especially during Mardi Gras . Costume parties are particularly popular in the United States , where adults and teenagers too old to beg for candy celebrate Halloween in costumes.
These balls are celebrated in different ways. What they all have in common is that the guests appear in costumes:
- The guests dress up in order to make new acquaintances without being recognized.
- A festive event with light music, at which the costumed guests are judged by a jury , whereby a distinction is often made between group and individual costumes .
- Halloween parties are mainly about wearing the creepy disguise possible.
- A dance ball in Carnival where only women with face masks are allowed (no full costumes). Gentlemen wear tuxedos, tails or uniforms. Such events in particular are referred to as mask nball. In Austria they are called Redoute [
reˈdut ].
The Rudolfina-Redoute , the largest couleur ball in Austria, has been held since 1912. - A Gschnas in Austria usually a costume ball without elegant evening wear , as opposed to the ball or to Redoute.
Unmasked guests are also permitted at some events. But you usually pay a higher entrance fee.
