from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rudolfina-Redoute [ reˈdut ] is a masked ball in Vienna based on the stylistic models of Viennese ball culture . It traditionally takes place on Shrove Monday during the Vienna ball season in the Vienna Hofburg and is organized by the KÖStV Rudolfina Vienna . The Redoute is the largest masked ball in Vienna.

history

The Rudolfina Redoute already has its origins in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . It is traditionally organized by the student association Rudolfina, which gives it its name , which first held a dance event (May wreaths) in Fischbach's garden and in the “Zum wilden Mann” halls on May 4, 1899.

The May wreath took place from 1899 to 1907. From 1907 (or 1908) to 1914, the May wreath became a festival under the name “Rudolfina Kränzchen”. Because of the First World War there was an interruption; for the year 1920 there is a carnival evening together with the KÖStV Kürnberg in the Türkenschanzpark . After that, the “Rudolfina Kränzchen” from the time before the war was taken up again; such an event has been booked for the years 1921 and 1922.

The “Rudolfina Kränzchen” became the very first “Rudolfina Redoute”, which was invited to the Hotel Continental at Praterstrasse 7 on Saturday, January 13, 1923 . It was quite typical for this time that little wreaths became "redoubts". From 1923 Rudolfina redoubts were continuously recorded until 1929. From 1924 the festival always took place on Shrove Monday and on February 28, 1927 the first Rudolfina redoubt took place in the Hofburg (large ballroom and new hall).

Since student corporations were banned and dissolved during the National Socialist rule in Austria , there was no Rudolfina Redoute between 1938 and 1945. In 1947 the first redoubt took place in Ebendorferstrasse on a small scale with drinks and food brought along. The first major post-war redoubt was held in the Palais Pallavicini in 1948, and then from 1949 to 1958 in the Sofiensäle . In 1959 the Redoute returned to its traditional venue in the First Republic , the Vienna Hofburg. The organizers state that it is the largest ball event for color students.

Masking

Today the Rudolfina-Redoute is the largest masked ball in Vienna. There is a strict dress code for the Rudolfina Redoute; Ladies wear long evening dresses and masks that cover the eye area until they are unmasked at midnight . Gentlemen wear evening wear , i.e. H. Tailcoat , tuxedo or corresponding uniform (so-called "large formal suit "). Until the unmasking at midnight, there is a women's choice at the ball .
