The Kulturzentrum Schlachthof in Bremen is located on the area of the former municipal slaughterhouse on the edge of the Bürgerweide , near the main train station , and belongs to the Bremen-Findorff district . It is the largest cultural center in Bremen. Around 300 different events with a total of around 100,000 visitors are held in the cultural center each year.

history

The current building complex essentially consists of the tower complex with chimney, the boiler house and storage facilities of the original slaughterhouse, which was built in 1892 and partially demolished in 1981. Because of the demolition plans, the Kulturverein Schlachthof was founded in 1979, which managed to save these parts of the building from demolition and to add elements of modern architecture. Most recently, in 1996, the area of today's foyer was added, a glass box which, as an entrance area on two levels with a total of around 160 m², connects the former warehouse building with the tower and the boiler hall.

The cultural center

The following rooms are available for events in the Schlachthof cultural center: the boiler hall, the magazine cellar and the magazine floor, a media workshop, a theater workshop, the clock room, a music practice room for women and girls as well as facilities on the outside area. The slaughterhouse bar is also located in the building as a restaurant.

Boiler hall

The Kesselhalle is intended for film, theater, music and dance events. Both larger music events, such as concerts, but also, for example, author readings, can be held in the hall.

The boiler hall has a floor area of 455 m² and a ceiling height of 10.50 m. It has a 92 m² stage with a stage width of 17.50 m and a stage depth of 7.50 m on the left and 3 m on the right with a permanently installed screen measuring 4 m × 3 m. The stage can also be extended if necessary. The stage is encompassed in a U-shape by a fixed grandstand construction that offers space for 500 seats or 1000 standing places. The boiler hall also has a backstage area with its own entrance. There are also two counters in the boiler hall, the longer one at the entrance area and a shorter one on the opposite wall.

Architecturally, the boiler hall represents a merger of the functional elements for the events with the old industrial architecture.

Magazine cellar

The magazine cellar is used to organize smaller concerts, but also for celebrations by users themselves or readings. For larger events, the storage cellar is included as an ancillary room via the common foyer.

The storage cellar is located in the basement of the former storage building and has a floor area of 200 m² with a ceiling height of 2.40 m. There is room for 200 people in standing room at events. If required, the room can be equipped with two mobile counters with a cooling system and a 24 m² stage platform.

The magazine cellar has the barren atmosphere of a cellar.

Magazine bottom

The magazine floor is intended for holding lectures, discussions, children's theater, workshops and seminars and is located on the top floor. The room has a floor area of 95 m² with a ceiling height of 2 to 4 m and is characterized by 24 small windows, five skylights and the exposed wooden beams. The room can be completely darkened. The room can seat up to 80 spectators.

Media workshop

On level I in the tower there is the media workshop, a studio that is equipped with analog and digital editing stations, studio technology and presentation technology. There are also video and photo cameras, reportage lights and other recording accessories. The workshop should be available for media-educational and artistic projects, commissioned work and for renting equipment for cultural media productions.

Theater workshop

The theater workshop SCHLACHTHOF, an internationally cooperating youth theater company, works in the tower level II (and in the clock room). The room is 70 m². Performances take place in the boiler hall and in the storage room.

Clock room

On level III of the tower, behind the clock, which is also visible from the outside, is the so-called clock room, which offers a good view of the city of Bremen. The tower clock is designed to be transparent. The 80 m² large and 4.70 m high room is intended for seminars, conferences, theater and music groups.

Outdoor area

In the forecourt of the slaughterhouse there has been an approximately 1,000 square meter skateboarding facility since 1990, which is used by skateboarders , inline skaters and BMX riders.

There is also a summer garden with a small building in the form of a pavilion, which is used for catering to the outdoor area, as well as an amphitheater -style arena with around 300 seats and a 50 square meter indoor space for open-air events such as concerts and Theatrical performances between May and September.
