Hans-Eckardt Wenzel (born July 31, 1955 in Kropstädt near Wittenberg ) is a German songwriter , self - taught multi-instrumentalist , author , director and composer . On posters, albums and concert announcements he only uses his last name Wenzel as his stage name.

Life

The son of an art educator grew up with four sisters in Wittenberg, where he went to Melanchthon high school and pursued his musical and literary inclinations at an early age. His sister is the actress Claudia Wenzel . From 1976 to 1981 he studied cultural studies and aesthetics at the Humboldt University in Berlin and founded the “Liedertheater Karls Enkel ” in 1976 , which was closed in 1985.

Since 1981 he has been working as a freelance writer, singer, actor and director. From 1979 to the end of the 1990s he worked closely with the actor, singer and author Steffen Mensching , with whom he put together and performed numerous stage programs, mostly clown pieces that were mostly profoundly philosophical, such as the song theater “Hammer = Rehwü” in 1982 (together with Karl's grandchildren , the folk band Wacholder and Beckert & Schulz ) which was banned in some regions or the pre- and post- turnaround pieces “Neues aus der Da Da eR ” (1982), “Altes aus der Da Da eR” (1989) and "Da Da Last eR from the" (as Da Da Last eR from the 1990 made into a movie).

In September 1989, Wenzel was a main author of the resolution of rock musicians and songwriters , with which numerous musicians demanded changes in the GDR .

Wenzel made his debut as a soloist in 1986 with the LP Stirb mit mir a piece , which shortly afterwards received the GDR record award Golden Amiga in the chanson category . On this LP and several following albums (especially Lied am Rand and Vier Uhr Morgen ) he attracted attention as an interpreter of songs by Theodor Kramer . In 2002 he was again awarded the German Cabaret Prize for his translations and interpretations of the work of the folk singer Woody Guthrie . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

In 2003, Woody Guthrie's daughter, Nora Guthrie , invited Wenzel to New York; At her request, he translated her father's texts into German and set unpublished works to music. The result is called Ticky Tock - Wenzel sings Woody Guthrie. In September 2006 Wenzel went on a tour through Germany with Arlo Guthrie , and in 2011 he performed songs with him on a summer evening .

On October 26, 2007, Wenzel's studio album Believe it or not, was released. In 2009 Wenzel released the CD Masken - Wenzel sings Christoph Hein and König von Honolulu - along with two other productions . In 2010 and 2011, Wenzel and Arlo Guthrie went on tour together again and presented the 2010 CD Every 100 Years - Arlo Guthrie & Wenzel live at the Wartburg. Wenzel's thirtieth album Kamille und Mohn, with which Wenzel topped the list of songs for months , was released in 2010. At the Leipzig Book Fair 2011, Wenzel's new volume of poetry Since I am by the sea, the audio book of the same name was published as a double CD in June 2011. This was followed by a DVD production from the annual KAMP Open Air with Wenzel & Band and guests, as well as a live CD WOODY100 on the occasion of Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday. This included Tom Morello and Billy Bragg . For this, Wenzel was awarded the 2012 annual song best list. The CD Widersteh, as long as you can was released on February 15, 2013. With this CD, Wenzel was also number 1 on the list of best songs and received the annual award of the list of best songs in 2013. Together with the writer Christoph Hein , Wenzel published the audio book in March 2013 Homer's first book - Corrections. At the beginning of 2014 a Spanish-language CD, La guitarra al hombro, and the special edition Kleine Insel, dedicated to the refugees of this world, were released for the first time .

In February 2014 Wenzel was on tour with his band in Cuba and Nicaragua , u. a. at the Festival International de Poesía de Granada . On December 5, 2014, the CD Viva la poesía , which was partly recorded in Havana , was released. The songs are - contrary to their title suggests - in German.

Hans-Eckardt Wenzel lives and works in Berlin and in his retreat in Kamp in Western Pomerania and has four children.
