history

1946 to 1989

Mitteldeutsche Verlags-GmbH was founded on April 27, 1946 on the initiative of the Provincial Administration of Saxony as a publisher for administrative documents and works by private authors. In 1947 the state of Saxony-Anhalt became the sole shareholder, and in 1952 it was renamed Mitteldeutscher Verlag Halle / Saale . In 1959, the publishing house was co-organizer of the 1st Bitterfeld conference ("Grab your pen, buddy, socialist national literature needs you!"), As a result of which the Mitteldeutscher Verlag increasingly published young authors. On this basis, the publisher developed into an important publisher for contemporary literature in the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1963 the collective of the Mitteldeutscher Verlag Halle was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle district .

Authors until 1989

During the GDR era, the authors of the Mitteldeutscher Verlag included Bruno Apitz ( Nackt unter Wölfen ), Volker Braun , Günter de Bruyn , Heinz Czechowski , Hanns Cibulka , Elke Erb , Peter Gosse , Uwe Greßmann , Werner Heiduczek , Wolfgang Held , Kerstin Hensel , Bernd Jentzsch , Werner Lindemann , Erich Loest , Erik Neutsch ( trace of the stones ), Georg Maurer , Karl Mickel , Martin Selber , Harry Thürk , Helmut Vogt and Christa Wolf . The pianist, music writer and editor Bronislaw von Pozniak (1887–1953) was one of the non-fiction authors .

1990 to 2020

In 1990 the publishing house was privatized through a management buy-out , but in 1996 it had to apply for full execution.

In 1997, a newly founded company was able to take over the publisher's name and book inventory from the enforcement and reach an agreement with the authors regarding the transfer of rights.

In 2001 the publishing house acquired the names, book stocks and related rights of the Anhaltische Verlagsgesellschaft Dessau and has continued its program as an imprint ever since .

In 2013 a major fire destroyed half of the publisher's output.

In 2014 the last work Gelinde's horror by Erich Loest was published , who published in the mdv in GDR times until he left the country in 1981 .

2019, the publisher received the cooperation with 65 other small and independent publishers Española price .

Corona crisis 2020

The cancellation of the Leipzig Book Fair at the beginning of March 2020, the ban on readings and the closure of bookshops also hit the Mitteldeutscher Verlag "with full force" (see Socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic # book industry ). The ten employees were completely on short-time work . In mid-May, "half of the financial reserves that had ... been built up in the past 15 years" were used up.
