Sven Marquardt (born 3. February 1962 in Berlin ) is a German photographer and bouncer of techno clubs Berghain .

Life

Wall painting on the house, Potsdamer Strasse 151, in Berlin-Schöneberg

Sven Marquardt grew up in East Berlin . His father was a motorway builder, his mother a medical-technical assistant. In 1982 he began his training as a photographer and cameraman at DEFA . After first publications in the newspapers Sonntag and Das Magazin , he was Rudolf Schäfer's assistant from 1985 to 1986 . He worked as a fashion photographer for the magazine Sibylle around Roger Melis and Arno Fischer until the end of the 1980s . In the documentary "A dream in strawberry foil" about the fashion world of the GDR he appears as a contemporary witness.

In 1987/1988 he took part in the Xth  Art Exhibition of the GDR and in 1988 became a member of the Association of Visual Artists . Marquardt, whose pictures “described the inside and outside of his existence in the big city” and staged “exalted dreams of lust and fear”, was a photographic documentarist of the GDR subculture .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , Marquardt initially withdrew from photography: "I had the feeling that I couldn't say anything more," he said later in an interview with Die Zeit .

In the 1990s, Marquardt began to work as a doorman for his brother Oliver Marquardt ( DJ Jauche ) at parties in the Ostgut discotheque . When the Ostgut closed in 2003, he started working as a photographer again. With the move to Berghain and its rise to a well-known address, Sven Marquardt became a symbol of Berlin nightlife, as he still watches over the entrance of the guests almost every weekend at the entrance door of the club, but mostly supported by other bouncers.

He wrote his autobiography, published in 2014, together with Judka Strittmatter , a granddaughter of the GDR writer Erwin Strittmatter .
