Art exhibition of the GDR
The GDR art exhibitions took place in Dresden between 1946 and 1988 .
In addition to the “classic” exhibition areas of painting , graphics and sculpture , the latest works and developments from fashion , design , commercial graphics , photography and handicrafts were increasingly shown during the last few exhibitions . The steadily increasing number of artists and visitors showed the increasing popularity of these exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister in the Dresden Albertinum was completely cleared for the art exhibitions . Catalogs were published from the beginning, followed by stamps, slide and postcard series. The catalogs still give an insight into the development of art in the GDR. While the first exhibitions were still shaped by the pathos of reconstruction, the 1960s were dominated by pictures that were created as part of the Bitterfelder Weg . With the increase in exhibiting artists in the following years, the variety of art styles also increased. This, in turn, made the art exhibitions even more popular.
The high number of visitors was due not least to the fact that the companies organized trips to the art exhibitions during working hours and entire brigades often visited the exhibitions. Interest in art did not always come first. The GDR art exhibitions were always a political issue. Functionaries such as Willi Sitte , Bernhard Heisig and Walter Womacka were given exposed locations in the exhibition. Hours before the opening of the exhibition, works were moved around or even removed from the exhibition at the instigation of SED cadres . In some cases, changes were made to the hanging after the opening tour of the party and state leadership.
