Hans-Joachim Kerscher

Hans-Joachim Kertscher (born January 2, 1944 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German literary scholar .

Life

After completing his apprenticeship as a typesetter, Hans-Joachim Kertscher studied German and history at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1964 . In 1966 he was de-registered for political reasons. It was sent to production for what was then called "probation". Only after his subsequent military service in the NVA was he able to continue his studies from 1969 to 1973 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and graduated as a certified teacher for German and history.

From 1973 to 1978 he was a research assistant at the German Institute of the University of Halle, where he received his doctorate with a thesis on Lessing reception. From 1978 to 1980 he worked as a lecturer for essays and poetry at Mitteldeutscher Verlag Halle-Leipzig. This was followed by activities as senior assistant at the chair for cultural theory / aesthetics at the TH Ilmenau (1980–1985) and from 1985 to 1990 at the German Institute (chair for modern German literature) at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg.

In 1987 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on “ Prometheus . Myth and Material in Cultural History ”and was appointed university lecturer in 1988. From 1990 to 2009 he was a professor at the Interdisciplinary Center for Research on the European Enlightenment at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, responsible for the area of ​​German literary and cultural history of the 18th century. In 2004 he was appointed associate professor for modern German literature.

Hans-Joachim Kertscher's academic activity is primarily devoted to topics relating to German literary and cultural history of the 18th century. Since December 2003, Hans-Joachim Kertscher has been chairman of the Halle (Saale) local association of the Goethe Society and from 2011 to 2019 a board member of the Goethe Society in Weimar eV.
