Live and act

Carl August Schwetschke was born on September 29, 1756 in Glauchau, Saxony. After an apprenticeship as a bookseller, he worked as an assistant to the bookseller Johann Samuel Heinsius in Leipzig and Emmanuel Haller in Bern, before he joined Carl Hermann Hemmerde's bookstore in Halle (Saale) at the end of 1781 . In 1788 Schwetschke changed from a factor to a partner; the publisher was now called Hemmerde & Schwetschke .

In 1820, after the early death of his brother-in-law Friedrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Gebauer (1786–1819), the son of the publisher Johann Jakob Gebauer , Schwetschke also acquired his printing and publishing house Gebauer, which was then renamed Gebauer-Schwetschke . A few years later he slowly withdrew from the publishing business: in 1828 he first took up his younger son Carl Gustav Schwetschke as a partner in the Gebauer-Schwetschke publishing house and on January 1, 1829, his eldest son Carl Ferdinand Schwetschke became a co-owner of the Hemmerde & publishing house. Schwetschke , which has since carried the company name CA Schwetschke & Sohn . Carl August Schwetschke died on September 19, 1839 in Halle (Saale).

Schwetschke published over 800 works from 1789 to 1839. As with his predecessor Carl Hermann Hemmerde and his successor Moritz Bruhn , the focus was on academic titles, including from the fields of law, philology and natural sciences. Schwetschke published works by the chemist Karl Wilhelm Gottlob Kastner , the mineralogist Christian Keferstein and the lawyers Carl August Tittmann and Christoph Christian von Dabelow .

Schwetschke enjoyed a high reputation as a publisher. He also became known nationwide for his advocacy of bookselling interests, for example with regard to the contentious issue of publishing rights for reprints. He was a city councilor in Halle, was involved as a patron of the Halle theater and held several honorary church positions.

His grave is on Halle's Stadtgottesacker (arch 36).

The Gebauer-Schwetschke publishing archive , which has been handed down in full , which covers the time from the founding of the company under Johann Justinus Gebauer to its continuation by his son Johann Jakob Gebauer to the merger of the Gebauer and Hemmerde & Schwetschke companies under the aegis of Carl August Schwetschke and his successor is in the Halle / Saale city archive. The holdings have been developed since 2010 with funding from the German Research Foundation .
