Carl Ferdinand Schwetschke (born August 17, 1798 in Halle (Saale) , † February 14, 1843 there ) was a German publisher .

Life

Carl Ferdinand Schwetschke was born on August 17, 1798 in Halle (Saale). He completed his training as a bookseller in Königsberg , Vienna and St. Petersburg before joining the Hemmerde & Schwetschke publishing house , which was headed by his father Carl August Schwetschke . There he soon assumed managerial positions and became a partner on January 1, 1829; from then on the publishing bookstore traded as CA Schwetschke & Sohn . In addition, he headed the publishing bookstore Expedition of the Allgemeine Literaturzeitung, which his father had acquired, from 1824 . After a serious illness, Carl Ferdinand Schwetschke died on February 14, 1843 at the age of only 44 years. His brother Carl Gustav Schwetschke then had to take over the orphaned management of the publishing bookstores.

Publishing activity

Schwetschke made a name for himself as a publisher of important authors and works. At the publishing house CA Schwetschke & Sohn z. B. the Suidae Lexicon. Graecae et latine (from 1834) by the philologist Gottfried Bernhardy and the Lexicon arabico-latinum (from 1830), a major work by the orientalist Georg Wilhelm Freytag , published. In his role as head of the Expedition publishing house for the Allgemeine Literaturzeitung, Schwetschke published z. B. the renowned Halle literary newspaper , which was published by Johann Samuelersch and Christian Gottfried Schütz . The newspaper was founded in Jena as early as 1785 as a general literary newspaper by Schütz, Christoph Martin Wieland and Friedrich Justin Bertuch . Schwetschke always paid particular attention to the high printing and editorial quality of his publishing products, which he ensured by arranging precise revision readings.

In 1825 he was one of the founding members of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels . From 1832 to 1835 Schwetschke was treasurer on the board of the Börsenverein.

Honors

Carl Ferdinand Schwetschke was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Leipzig in 1834 . Schwetschkestrasse in Halle (Saale) is named after the Schwetschke publishing family.
