Live and act

So far nothing is known about Johann Jakob Gebauer's youth and bookselling training. After the death of his father Johann Justinus Gebauer , who founded the Gebauer publishing house , he continued the publishing company and printing company from 1772, initially together with his mother and from 1776 as sole owner for over 40 years. After his death in 1818, his son Friedrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Gebauer (1786–1819) took over the business, but died surprisingly only a year later. The Gebauer publishing bookstore and printing company was then acquired by Carl August Schwetschke and renamed Gebauer-Schwetschke .

Under Johann Jakob Gebauer's direction, the publishing house expanded its program considerably. The most important works published by him include z. B. Johann Christoph Adelung's six-volume glossary manuale mediae et infimae latinitatis (1772–1784), Gottlob Benedikt von Schirach's four-volume magazine of German criticism (1772–1776), Johann Melchior Goezes history of the Bibles in Lower Saxony , writings by the theologian Karl Friedrich Bahrdt and the medical doctor Johann Friedrich Gmelin as well as a Compendiary Library of non-profit knowledge for all classes in 27 departments.

The Gebauer-Schwetschke publishing archive , which has been handed down in full , covers the time from the founding of the company under Johann Justinus Gebauer to its continuation by his son Johann Jakob Gebauer to the merger of the Gebauer and Hemmerde & Schwetschke companies under the aegis of Carl August Schwetschke and his successor is in the Halle / Saale city archive. The holdings have been developed since 2010 with funding from the German Research Foundation .
