Johann Justinus Gebauer (born May 19, 1710 in Waltershausen , † January 26, 1772 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German publisher .

From 1724 Johann Justinus Gebauer completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller with Chr. Franciscus Buch in Jena . He then worked from 1732, initially as a factor in the printing works of Stephan Orban (1681–1732) from Halle . After Orban's death, he bought his printing house and continued to run it under his own company. He also founded a publishing bookstore in Halle. After Gebauer's death, the company was continued from 1772, initially by his son Johann Jakob Gebauer and from 1818 by his grandson Friedrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Gebauer (1786–1819). When he died at the age of only 33, Carl August Schwetschke acquired the Gebauer printing and publishing house, which has since operated under the name of Gebauer-Schwetschke .

Gebauer moved around 500 works; among the most important are - in addition to the first Canstein Bible editions - z. B. the publication of the first 30 volumes of the general world history (1742–1766, adaptations inter alia by Georg David Kypke and Johann Salomo Semler ), the 24-volume edition of the writings of Martin Luther (1740–1753) and Walch's Lutherische, edited by Johann Georg Walch Church postil . In addition to German and Latin titles, Gebauer also published and printed works in Bohemian, Polish, Wendish and Hungarian.

His grave is on Halle's Stadtgottesacker (arch 36).

The Gebauer-Schwetschke publishing archive , which has been handed down in full , which covers the time from the founding of the company under Johann Justinus Gebauer to its continuation by his son Johann Jakob Gebauer to the merger of the Gebauer and Hemmerde & Schwetschke companies under the aegis of Carl August Schwetschke and his successor is in the Halle / Saale city archive. The holdings have been developed since 2010 with funding from the German Research Foundation .
