Live and act

Johann Georg was the son of the Saxon-Meiningischen general superintendent Georg Walch (born October 3, 1656 in Lengsfeld; † October 5, 1722) and his second wife Erdmuthe Margarethe Schmidt (* 1668 Schleusingen; † 1744) born. After attending schools and high school in Meiningen, he began studying at the University of Leipzig on February 11, 1710 . Here, among others, Ludwig Christian Crell , Christian Friedrich Börner , Johann Burckhardt Mencke , Gottfried Olearius , Karl Otto Rechenberg , Urban Gottfried Siber and Johann Friedrich Olearius became his teachers. In 1713 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy, participated in the university's reading operations and wrote articles for the Acta eruditorum and the German Acta eruditorum , two early scientific journals in which mainly book reviews were published.

In 1717 he received a call to Jena, where in 1718 he became associate professor of philosophy and antiquity at the University of Jena . In 1719 he became a full professor for rhetoric, and in 1722 he took over the chair for poetry. In 1722 he received an extraordinary professorship in theology, received his doctorate in theology in 1726 and advanced to full professor of theology in 1728. In 1731 he became assessor at the consistory, was inspector of the Eisenach students and church council of Saxony-Eisenach. In 1737 he became inspector of the Anspach students and Anspach consistorial councilor. In 1741 he also received the inspection of the Meiniger students, with which he received the title of a Meiniger-Gotha church council and in 1742 the position of a church council of Coburg-Saalfeld.

He published extensive compilations of church and dogma history, especially the "Historical and theological introduction to the religious disputes of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church" (1730-39), the "Historical and theological introduction to the religious disputes, which especially apart from the Evangelical-Lutheran Church emerged ”(1733–36) and the“ Bibliotheca theologica selecta ”(1757–65). In a report written at the request of his sovereign in 1747, Walch dealt with the pietism of his time and took a position against the Moravian Brethren . 1740–53 he published Luther's works in German in 24 volumes .

Walch belonged to the academic self-government in Jena and was Rector of the University of Jena in the winter semesters 1728, 1732, 1736, 1740, 1744, 1748, 1750, 1754, 1758, 1762 .

His Philosophical Lexicon and his controversial pieces against Wolff's metaphysics are significant from the perspective of the history of philosophy .
