Carl Hermann Hemmerde (born November 23, 1708 near Magdeburg , † May 7, 1782 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German publisher .

Live and act

Hemmerde initially worked as an assistant in Johann Georg Klemm's publishing bookstore . After his death he married Klemm's daughter on June 4, 1737 and took over his publishing bookstore, which he renamed Hemmerde . At the end of 1781, Carl August Schwetschke entered the bookstore as a factor through the agency of the Leipzig publisher Philipp Erasmus Reich . Half a year later, on May 7th, 1782, Hemmerde died. The publishing house was run by his second wife along with her factor for the next six years. From 1788 Schwetschke was then a partner; the publishing bookstore now operated under the name Hemmerde & Schwetschke .

Hemmerde's achievement was the development of a large publishing program with important authors and works, among which Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's Messiah stood out. This laid the foundation for the reputation of the CA Schwetschke & Sohn publishing house . In total, Hemmerde published around 750 titles in the years 1737 to 1782, whereby, in addition to some works of aesthetics, mainly humanities, natural sciences and medical books were published, e.g. B. Works by theologians Johann Jacob Rambach and Johann Salomo Semler , the physician Johann Gottlob Krüger , the natural scientist Christian Gottlieb Kratzenstein and the legal scholars Christoph Weidlich and Johann Friedrich Eisenhart .
