The Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium (LMG for short) is a high school in Lutherstadt Wittenberg . It is the only school in Germany that has been rebuilt according to the ideas and concept of the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser . The planning was carried out by the architects Peter Pelikan and Heinz M. Springmann . The renovation took place from 1997 to 1999; Hundertwasser, who died in 2000, still saw the converted school. In addition to this school, Saxony-Anhalt has another Hundertwasser building with the Green Citadel of Magdeburg .

Since the merger on August 1, 2006, the Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium consists of the former Melanchthon-Gymnasium (MGW), which is located near the center of the old town, and the former Martin-Luther-Gymnasium (MLG), which is part of the its numerous colors stand out from the new development area of the city. In the grammar school, all grades from grade 5 are taught. The average number of pupils is around 1000. The simple "Erfurt II" prefabricated building from the GDR era, which corresponded to the former MLG and the Am Trajuhnschen Bach elementary school, became a building with lots of green spaces, with trees growing out of windows and golden domes and without straight lines. These were strictly frowned upon by the Viennese artist. Together with the outer facade, the interior of the high school was also partially renovated and adapted to the style. The individual floors reflect the four elements fire, water, earth, air, as well as an additional rainbow element, but this idea did not come from Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The grammar school is one of two grammar schools in Lutherstadt.
The Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium is part of the network "European School Project of the State of Saxony-Anhalt " and has the European language seal . Thanks to its numerous contacts with partner schools around the world, the Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium offers special opportunities for the students. School life includes the school choir “LutherVoices” as well as the high school choir, the school newspaper “Propeller”, a yearbook editorial office and many other projects.
In 2006 the Martin-Luther-Gymnasium landed in third place in the election for “School of the Year” organized by the UNICUM magazine .
The school currently has 1,065 students and 77 teachers (as of September 12, 2014).
