European language seal
With the European Language Label (also English European Language Label ) since 1997 are outstanding year projects and initiatives in the field of teaching and learning of foreign languages excellent in Europe. The competition was launched by the European Commission . The language seal is awarded decentrally by the countries participating in the Erasmus + program.
background
Since the second half of the nineties, the EU Commission has been working harder to preserve the diversity of languages in a Europe that is growing closer together and to encourage citizens to learn foreign languages. This is based on the one hand on the employment policy goal of strengthening Europe's economy through greater and above all cross-border mobility of citizens, on the other hand the intercultural goal of promoting the growing together of Europe by breaking down prejudices. Language learning is promoted both within the EU education programs such as the Lifelong Learning Program, through special measures such as the European Year of Languages 2001, or as part of the competition for the European Language Label, which has been held annually since 1997.
Goals of the initiative
Multilingualism is at the core of the “European Language Seal” initiative, which started with a pilot project and expanded into a Europe-wide initiative in 2001. The aim is to make successful concepts known to a broad public. By supporting innovative projects at local and national level, the quality of language teaching is to be improved across Europe. Every year the language seal is therefore awarded to innovative language teaching projects in the participating countries. The main objectives of the competition for the "European Language Label" are the following:
- The award is given to projects that introduce people to foreign language learning in an exemplary and innovative way,
- Projects that exemplify foreign language skills at the most varied of levels or that are committed to improving foreign language teaching in an exemplary manner.
- The measures classified as particularly outstanding by a jury of experts are also intended to encourage imitation or
- encourage you to transfer the model presented to the learning of other languages or other target groups.
European language seal in Germany
In Germany, the competition for the European language seal has been held since 1999. It is carried out alternately by Education for Europe , the National Agency at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training , the German Academic Exchange Service and the Pedagogical Exchange Service , the National Agency for EU programs in the school sector. To institutions can participate in all levels of education, who are resident in Germany - from the toddler education about the school and higher education to vocational and adult education . All languages spoken in the EU member states are permitted. Every project should contain at least one of the EU official languages as a target language in language teaching (also as a bridge language). The application documents should be in German. Only those projects / initiatives that are beyond the planning stage but are not yet part of the "routine offer" of an institution are awarded. The application must therefore clearly demonstrate how the project was or will be implemented. A »European language seal« can also be awarded to projects that have received funding from an educational program of the European Union ( Erasmus program , Comenius program , Leonardo (EU) , Grundtvig ) or, for example, Currently received. The participants from the individual countries should each take into account a national thematic focus - which follows various key questions - and the European criteria equally.

Since the introduction of the new EU education program Erasmus + in 2014, Germany has no longer participated in the competition for the European Language Label.
