Keimzeit is a German rock music group that was founded in Lütte in 1980 under the name Jogger .

Band history

The early years

At the end of the 1970s, the four siblings Norbert, Hartmut, Roland and Marion Leisegang from the town of Lütte near Bad Belzig performed at family celebrations and in pubs. In 1980 they formed a band under the name Jogger , which was renamed Keimzeit in 1982 .

Norbert Leisegang became the front man. He also began to write songs with German lyrics. That contributed greatly to the band's success. In 1984 Ulrich “Ulle” Sende joined as lead guitarist. Marion Leisegang left the band temporarily in 1985 due to the birth of their first child. In 1989, after the birth of her second child, she finally dropped out. In 1989 Matthias Opitz (piano, keyboard, organ) became a permanent member of the band.

In the 1980s, the band gained a loyal fan base at thousands of concerts, especially in what is now the state of Brandenburg . Concerts lasting more than five hours were not uncommon. In addition to the actual performance, the evenings turned into sometimes very alcoholic parties. The performances were also mostly organized away from the state-controlled music business of the GDR, for example in village pubs with their event halls. At the end of the 1980s, the band's license to play was temporarily revoked by the state artists' organization. The titles Mama tell me why and Frau aus Gold were the reasons here. Stylistically, the music of the early years was typical blues rock , which received its special note from the sometimes very poetic lyrics. Her hit Kling Klang , which only appeared on an album in 1993 , also comes from this time . The repertoire also included classics of international blues and rock music.

The turning point

It was only in 1988 that Keimzeit was given the opportunity to professionally record songs on the GDR radio station . Since then they have also been played on the radio - especially on the youth radio " DT64 ". However, the recordings were only released in 1990 as a debut album Irrenhaus at Hansa Berlin. Ralf Benschu (saxophone, flute, clarinet) became a permanent member of the band in the same year; however, he has been a guest musician since 1986.

With the title track of the album, the band achieved a “turning hit”: lines of text like “… crazy in the madhouse, the clever ones in parliament. It is your own fault who does not recognize the signs of the times ... ”said many GDR citizens from the heart. Elf 99 , the youth program on GDR television , also produced a video for the title Aircraft, which supported the metaphorical effect of the song in relation to the tangle of turns : For example, in the text line “… powdered and parked: the boss…” you can see an apparently Erich Honecker's picture carelessly placed in the corner . In addition, the band toured intensively through the (still) GDR and appeared several times on television and on the radio.

Part-time was Günter Baaske that is later than the SPD became known -Politiker, active from 1989 to 1999 as a manager of the band.

1991 to 1996

In 1991 the second album Kapitel Elf was released by Hansa / BMG , which stylistically followed the line of the debut album. In February 1993 Matthias Opitz left the band and was replaced by Andreas Sperling. In the same year, the third album, Bunte Scharte, was released (still with Opitz on the keyboard instruments), on which the band undertook stylistic excursions into South American rhythms. Her best-known song, Kling Klang, can also be found on this album, which sold more than 100,000 copies . In addition, the band continued to tour East Germany continuously - and more and more venues were found in West Germany.

In 1995 the fourth album Primeln & Elefanten was released , which offers numerous styles. A year later the band released a double CD with live recordings of six different concerts under the title Nachtvorstellung . The recordings were all made in December 1995 and January 1996. The album was produced by the American Tom Cunningham and mixed by his compatriot Dennis F. Moody. After completing a tour to the live album and the final appearance in the Munich slaughterhouse on November 3, 1996, Keimzeit took a longer concert break for the first time in the band's history: For almost six months the group did not stand together on a stage. The reason was increasing dissatisfaction of the musicians with the lack of musical development.

1997 to 2007

The band used 1997 for a creative break and the (initially unsuccessful) search for a suitable producer for their fifth studio album. At the beginning of 1998, Franz Plasa was won over and designed with him in the electromagnetic field . The album marks the beginning of a new era in the band's discography: they deliberately left the path of “Muesli-Chanson-Rock-'n'-Roll” (Norbert Leisegang) and let Plasa in the ICP-Studio in Brussels one miss the contemporary rock sound. The new sound made the band interesting for a younger audience, but lost many fans - especially from the ranks of GDR blues-rock lovers and East nostalgics - who had previously made up a large part of the audience. The following studio albums smart and left waiting (2000), 1000 people like me (2002) and Privates Kino (2005) were produced in a similar style . In addition to Plasa, Peter Schmidt was also hired as a producer. Ulrich Sende had already left the band in 2003 - not least because of the new production and music style. He was replaced by Rudi Feuerbach. Ralf Benschu's band membership was also often on the brink for the same reasons. Almost all musicians have been pursuing solo projects since that time (see main article on the individual musicians). In 2006 Keimzeit published the second live album Mensch Meier . Here Jürgen Block first came into play as a producer. The album was recorded during a double concert in Schwerin.

In 2007 the band's 25th anniversary on stage was celebrated with a tour through Germany. In June and July 2007 six open-air concerts took place in the larger cities of the East. On June 20, 2007, Keimzeit played with all former band members in front of 5000 spectators in the courtyard of the Berlin Kulturbrauerei . After the tour's final concert in Freiberg Tivoli , neither concerts nor publications were planned for 2008.

2008

In 2008, Norbert Leisegang took on the role of guest singer in a Wilhelm Busch program. In October and November the band went to Andalusia to record a new album. At the same time, they founded their own label with an affiliated publisher called Comic-Helden. After completing the recordings in the Spanish studio, Ralf Benschu left the band due to musical and personal differences.

2009 to 2010

On the album Stabile Currency Love, which was released on April 24, 2009, there are eleven songs; some with a complete brass section and mariachis . On April 29, 2009, Keimzeit went on tour again after a 14 month break in Rostock and played at the Citadel Music Festival in Berlin on July 11, 2009 . On August 6, 2009, a cog ride was organized for the first time during the Rostock Hansesail . Here the band played on the cog Wissemara live on the aft deck during a trip on the Baltic Sea off Warnemünde. Since then, the band has been sailing the Wissemara every year as part of the Hansesail. The 2010 tour began on January 1, 2010 with an appearance in front of over 80,000 visitors at Leuchtturm in Flammen in Warnemünde and was put under the motto Land in Sight . On November 19, 2010, the band released a retrospective of the same name in the form of a double CD as well as new editions of all albums since 2002 on their own label Comic Helden. In 2010 Keimzeit played a total of 50 concerts, including two in Switzerland. The cooperation with the Babelsberg German Film Orchestra began in 2010 . Originally for a joint radio concert, the first Keimzeit titles were arranged for the orchestra. Bernd Wefelmeyer acted as conductor and arranger .

2011 to 2012

For 2011, a further collaboration with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg was initially on the plan. Joint concerts were played in Bad Belzig, Potsdam and Berlin. The band went to Motril in Spain again to record a new studio album. Shortly after returning, guitarist Rudi Feuerbach left the band for personal reasons. On April 27, 2012, the tenth studio album Columbus was released. The guitar part was shared in 2012 by Lars Kutschke and Martin Weigel. After jazz trumpeter Sebastian Piskorz, Martin Weigel also became a permanent member of the band. At the beginning of 2012, the band heralded the 30th stage anniversary with over 50 concerts. In June 2012, an acoustic album was recorded in Ålesund, Norway , which was due for release in 2013.

2013 to 2014

At the beginning of 2013, Roland Leisegang and Keimzeit parted ways. Krishan Zeigner from Dresden was hired for the tour and Lin Dittmann from Erfurt has been playing drums since the beginning of 2014. On January 4, 2013, the first Keimzeit acoustic album entitled Midtsommer was released. For example, the 2013 Keimzeit concerts had the motto Columbus Island , but mostly acoustic ensembles were played (with violinist Gabriele Kienast, among others). Between October and December 2013, further recordings were made with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg and an album with the title Together was created under producer Jürgen Block . This was then published on April 25, 2014 and in the summer and autumn of 2014 some joint appearances with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg took place. In autumn 2014 Andreas Sperling took on the role of producer and Keimzeit recorded a new album. At the same time, the band was on stage for the first time in Gera in the theater during a ballet piece called KeimZeit . In a two-hour program, the band interprets 28 tracks from all the albums that have been released so far.

2015 to 2016

In January the band went to Gera again for a ballet performance. On March 6th, the album On a donkey into space was released. One week after the start of sales, the album entered the German album charts at number 97. During the two years the band gave more than 100 concerts. The Keimzeit Akustik Quintet went to Malta in October 2016 and recorded an album there called Albertine . With the traditional Christmas concerts in Berlin, Jena and Freiberg, the band ended a two-year tour for the album Auf einer Esel ins All .

2017 to 2019

The acoustic album Albertine was released on April 7, 2017 and parallel to the acoustic quintet concerts, the band celebrated their 35th stage anniversary. The album Irrenhaus was then re-released on March 23, 2018 . Supplemented by four tracks from live concerts, this album became the basis of the entire 2018 tour. In May 2018, the band went to the Candy Bomber Studios in Berlin-Tempelhof with producer Moses Schneider to record a new album.

Keimzeit released a new studio album entitled Das Schloss on February 1, 2019 . As part of the release, the band gave a total of seven concerts between February 1st and 9th. In the first week, Das Schloss reached number 89 in the German album charts.
