Günter Baaske (born October 17, 1957 in Belzig , Potsdam district , GDR ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2002 to 2004 and from 2009 to 2017 he was state minister in Brandenburg, from 2004 to 2009 chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

Life and work

After graduating from EOS “Geschwister Scholl” in Belzig in 1976 , he completed his basic military service in the NVA . After that, in 1978 he began studying at the “Karl Liebknecht” University of Education in Potsdam , which he successfully completed in 1982 as a graduate teacher for mathematics / physics .

From 1982 to 1990 Baaske was a teacher of mathematics / physics in Niemegk , Borkheide and at the "Albert Gutzmann" school for the deaf in East Berlin . From 1989 to 1999 he was the manager of the band Keimzeit (nickname "Hugo"). From 1990 to 2002 he worked as a department head and councilor in the Belzig district and (after the district reform) from 1994 in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district .

Baaske has two sons (* 1982 and 1992) and a daughter (* 1989) from his first marriage. On September 8, 2017, he married his longtime partner Anne Böttcher (* 1978), with whom he has another daughter (* 2012). His wife has been the state manager of the Brandenburg Workers' Welfare Association and an assessor in the SPD sub-district Potsdam-Mittelmark since 2008 .

He lives with his family in the Lütte district of Bad Belzig .

Political party

In 1989 Baaske was one of the founding members of the political alliance Neues Forum in the Belzig district and was a founding member of the SDP / SPD in this group. From 2002 to 2004 he was deputy chairman of the SPD sub-district Potsdam-Mittelmark and from 2004 to 2006 he was a member of the state board of the SPD Brandenburg . In July 2006 he was elected deputy state chairman and remained so until August 2008.

MPs and public offices

From 1990 to 1993 Baaske was a member of the city council of Belzig and a member of the district council in the district of Belzig. From 2008 to 2014 he was a member of the district council in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district.

From August 2002 to October 2004 he was Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health and Women of the State of Brandenburg ( Platzeck I cabinet ). In the state elections in 2004 , 2009 , 2014 and 2019 , Baaske was directly elected to the state parliament of Brandenburg in the constituency of Potsdam-Mittelmark II (constituency 18). In the fourth electoral term from October 2004 to October 2009 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and chairman of the main committee.

Since November 6, 2009 he was again a member of the state government of Matthias Platzeck and Dietmar Woidke . This time he headed the department for work, social affairs, women and family ( Cabinet Platzeck III and Cabinet Woidke I ).

Since November 5, 2014, he has headed the Ministry for Education, Youth and Sport in the Woidke II cabinet . Baaske resigned as Minister on September 26, 2017 for private reasons.
