Panta Rhei was a rock band from the GDR that existed from 1971 to 1975. A follow-up band of the same name has existed since 2016.

Surname

The name Panta Rhei is derived from the statement panta rhei ( πάντα ῥεῖ , German “everything flows”) from ancient Greek philosophy.

history

The group was founded in 1971 by Herbert Dreilich , Henning Protzmann and Ulrich "Ed" Swillms , who had already played together in the East Berlin band The Alexanders . It attracted attention because of its close jazz-oriented music with brass section and demanding, sometimes political lyrics. Most of these texts were written by jazz lyricist Jens Gerlach , some texts were by Herbert Dreilich. Dreilich, Protzmann and Swillms were responsible for the compositions. Panta Rhei was at the top of the GDR hit parades. Well-known titles of the band are Free Angela , Everything flows ... , Nachts and Tuyet . Free Angela calls for the release of Angela Davis from US custody, while Tuyet denounces the US bombing in the Vietnam War . In 1973 the album Panta Rhei appeared on the GDR record label Amiga . In the same year the band played the soundtrack for the television film Den Wolken a bit closer .

At the end of 1973 the singer of the band, Veronika Fischer , began a solo career. The wind players also left the band. Due to conceptual difficulties, Panta Rhei dissolved in 1975, and Dreilich, Protzmann and Swillms founded the Karat group . In 1981 Amiga released another album under the heading "The Early Years", which contains three pieces from the 1973 LP and six pieces produced by the GDR radio between 1971 and 1974 .

Henning Protzmann has been playing with Mathias Hessel (piano), Michael Lehrmann (guitar), Carsten Gradmann (drums), singer Ben Mayson (until 2018 with Czech singer Martina Bárta) and a brass section again under the name Panta Rhei since 2016 . The repertoire consists mainly of international and self-composed jazz numbers, supplemented by some titles from the old Panta Rhei and von Karat. Without a brass section, the formation appears as a Panta Rhei jazz crew .
