Ulrich "Ed" Swillms (born March 7, 1947 in East Berlin ) is a German composer and rock musician .

Life

Ulrich "Ed" Swillms received lessons from 1955 at the Volksmusikschule Berlin in the subjects of piano, clarinet and cello. From 1962 to 1964 he belonged to the special class of the University of Music in the fields of piano and cello. After studying cello as a major and piano as a minor from 1964 to 1968, he attended the Friedrichshain Music School with a major in piano in the field of dance music.

From 1969 to 1971 Swillms played in the group Die Alexanders , where he met Herbert Dreilich, among others . When the group broke up, Swillms joined the band Panta Rhei as a pianist and composer . In the meantime, Swillms participated in the All Star Band in 1973 . Panta Rhei existed until 1974.

The group Karat eventually formed from Panta Rhei , with whom Swillms was also able to celebrate successes as a composer. His most famous work Over seven bridges you must go (1978), text: Helmut Richter , became the band's big hit and was later to become a success for Peter Maffay , who covered the song. In 1986 he was chosen as a member of the Gitarreros .

In 1983 he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR III with the other members of Karat . Excellent class for art and literature.

For Ulrich “Ed” Swillms, the success brought hardship, especially the strenuous tour life. Out of consideration for his health, Swillms withdrew more and more from the Karat group. In 1987 he left the group entirely and concentrated for a long time on his private life. In 2003 he accepted an engagement as a keyboardist with the Jonathan Blues Band . Since 2005 he has been working again with the Karat group, primarily as a consultant, but also as a composer and keyboard player. So he can sometimes be seen live on stage with the band.

His best-known works in addition to Over Seven Bridges include The Blue Planet , Swan King , Every Hour , Albatross and King of the World .
