Schwanenkönig is an album by the German rock group Karat from 1980. It was recorded in the Amiga studios in Brunnenstrasse in East Berlin . The album was released in both parts of Germany at the same time.

content

Schwanenkönig is considered to be the most lyrical of all Karat albums , because with the titles Magisches Licht , Tiefsee , Schwanenkönig and Le Doyen I and Le Doyen II it contains a relatively large number of calm, textually encoded and profound songs. Some of the heavier songs ( Der Boxer , Großstadt ) seem a bit superficial. Mainly because of the noticeable tendency towards slightly mystical, encrypted lyrics, the criticism of this Karat album was noticeably divided for the first time. Despite the ballad-like preponderance, the hard rock Das Narrenschiff is one of the most successful and most intensively developed titles on the album. On the subject of the medieval book “ Ship of Fools ”, written by the humanist Sebastian Brant , criticism was not only made of human vices, but also of politics. The title song Schwanenkönig quickly became one of the band's greatest hits.

In the GDR and in the Federal Republic of Germany the album came out at the same time, but with different artwork.

The titles Magisches Licht mit Großstadt and, in the Federal Republic of Germany, the title song Schwanenkönig with Le Doyen II were released as singles.

In total, Schwanenkönig was able to sell a little over 700,000 times, and in the Federal Republic of Germany it only just missed a gold record .

Remarks

The text author Norbert Kaiser wrote the following accompanying text, which appeared on the LP cover:

“Before the Swan King goes on a journey for you, a few accompanying notes on some of the songs on this third KARAT LP, which was recorded in January 1980 after a turbulent touring season. Greek and Northern European mythology is the motif of the singing swan; it was used in all art eras in varying forms and expressions. The title song, which combines elements of the ballad and the folk song , was inspired by a fable by Leonardo da Vinci . Le Doyen's lyrical memory is from an evening in Paris where KARAT was a guest in September 1979. The ship of fools takes up a tradition from the 15th century . The first edition of the book of the same name by the humanist Sebastian Brant with a cycle of wood engravings by the young Albrecht Dürer was published for Carnival 1494 . Analogous to medieval customs, a parade of human follies, weaknesses and vices is performed. Brant gathered one hundred and eleven fools in his bell-ringing gallery, which, as a folk book, quickly became the first literary 'world' success in the German language. Our Faun borrowed a battered Wedekind tailcoat for the dance to the 'midnight blues' . The deep sea , laid out as a psychological study, tries to uncover hidden things in unfamiliar images, which sometimes threatens to be ground up between the millstones of habit and superficiality. For you who love the rainbow, KARAT has lit the 'magic light': Henning and Bernd have enchanted their strings, Micha drummed his heartbeat, Herbert and Ed did their best. "

The title song was created in 1998 by the Austrian band womanizer along with the SWF - Orchestra re-recorded for the anniversary album "25 years womanizer" in classic style.
