Anthoceros neesii is a species fromthe hornwort class (Anthocerotopsida). It is only known from a few, very small, disjoint areas in Central Europe and is considered to be threatened with extinction.
description
This moss consists of a yellowish-green, fleshy body of vegetation ( thallus ) that reaches a diameter of one centimeter. The horn-shaped capsules are three to seven millimeters long and 0.3 to 0.4 millimeters in diameter. Anthoceros neesii is an annual and monoecious plant. It produces spores that can survive for a few years even without the plant being present at the site.
The spores are covered with about 45 simple, not forked spines, the proximal side of the spores is warty-prickly, the distal side mostly covered with simple spines.
Distribution and Status
Anthoceros neesii is an endangered species that only occurs in 15 locations worldwide in Hesse ( Westerwald and Vogelsberg ) and two locations in Styria in Austria . In the 20th century it also occurred in two locations in the Czech Republic , where it is now extinct. It was found in Poland until the 19th century .
The species is mostly found on stubble fields. Their original habitats are not known; they are probably open locations on clay soils. The species is often associated with Anthoceros agrestis and Notothylas orbicularis .
In Germany the species is listed on the Red List as "Critically Endangered". Their endangerment is mainly due to the monotonous agricultural use of meadows and arable land and the use of pesticides .
Systematics and research history
Anthoceros neesii was first described as a species by Johannes Max Proskauer in 1958 . The new discoveries in Hesse were made by Josef Futschig .
