Dirk Michaelis

Dirk Michaelis (born November 26, 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz )) is a German singer and composer . From 1985 to 1991 he was the front man of the rock band Karussell . His most famous title is the ballad When I went away .

Life

Dirk Michaelis' parents were dancers, his stepfather was Gerd Michaelis, the director of the Gerd Michaelis Choir . The trained bricklayer attended the Friedrichshain music school in East Berlin . Since 1980 he has been touring the GDR as an amateur musician . During this time he made a living as a nurse and kindergarten teacher .

When he joined the Karussell group in 1985 as a singer, he became a professional musician and gave the band the greatest success in their history , especially with his composition As I went (text: Gisela Steineckert ). The music for this track, which he called his Yesterday with reference to Paul McCartney , he had composed as a child. After the carousel group was dissolved in 1991, Dirk Michaelis started his solo career. On his own label RCS (ROCKchanSONG) , he has published several records since 1992, on which he initially continued the collaboration with the lyricist Michael Sellin that had already begun during the carousel days, but also increasingly distinguished himself as the lyricist of his songs. From 1993 onwards, Dirk Michaelis appeared every now and then together with the singers André Herzberg and Dirk Zöllner under the name “Die drei HIGHligen”. After his duet with the star tenor José Carreras , Dirk Michaelis was appointed ambassador of the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation in July 2009 by Carreras . He is also committed to the UNICEF children's aid organization .

Dirk Michaelis has been under contract with the Berlin label Heart of Berlin since 2011 and has released his eleventh album under the title Dirk Michaelis singt ... with world hits in German. The textual new poems come from Gisela Steineckert and Michael Sellin.

In 2018 he released his album Mir gehern on his RockChanSong label .

Dirk Michaelis has two grown sons and a young daughter. He lives in Berlin . His brother is the actor Torsten Michaelis .

style

Dirk Michaelis' artistic work is primarily determined by demanding texts. As a composer he makes use of various musical means such as rhythm and blues , traditional and pop as well as versatile instrumentation, so that some of his CDs differ stylistically very much.
