Michael Sellin (born May 24, 1952 in Leipzig ) is a German musician and lyricist .

Life

Michael Sellin spent most of his childhood in Wilsdruff near Dresden. After graduating from high school, he moved to Berlin in 1970, where he obtained his diploma in economics at the University of Economics in Berlin-Karlshorst in 1974 . After graduating, he became the economic director of the Kreiskulturhaus Berlin-Mitte and then of the Berlin Concert and Guest Performance Directorate. From 1985 he made his living exclusively as a freelance musician and lyricist.

Michael Sellin has three grown sons. After more than twenty years of solidarity with the Friedrichshainer Ostkreuz , Michael Sellin lives and works in Berlin-Tempelhof .

Musical career

After early performance experience with the Wilsdruffer church choir, Michael Sellin learned to play the guitar at the age of 13 and one year later appeared on the stages of the dance halls in the area. After a few years in the GDR singing movement , Michael Sellin found his home in the blues . He was the singer, lyricist and guitarist of the Hof-Blues-Band , which with its ironic-socially critical songs like KWV-Blues quickly achieved cult status and was banned from performing .

This is how established rock musicians from the GDR became aware of Sellin. In the following years the demand for his lyrics increased steadily, so that in 1985 he interrupted his vocal activity and devoted himself exclusively to writing. He worked with important East German interpreters such as Datzu , Modern Soul Band , Ralf Bursy , Karussell , Petra Zieger and Veronika Fischer . In the 1980s he became one of the leading rock lyricists in the GDR. Songs such as At the end of the battle , Marie , Giant Hearts and Shadow Crosses with Carousel, Spiel mit mir mit Datzu, Ideale with Modern Soul Band, The small step too far with Veronika Fischer, Über Mut with Petra Zieger and Kalte Augen with Ralf Bursy were created .

The long-term cooperation with the former carousel singer Dirk Michaelis , which led to three albums together, is particularly important for the artistic development . Under the catchphrase "Rockchansons", the two created songs like Es ist in der Luft , Stilles Dorf , Poor Irrer and The Clown . While he continues to work as a lyricist for other performers, Sellin has also been a singer again since the 1990s. He returned to his musical roots as the front man of the group "Blues and Loose". He toured Germany and released two albums. As an interpreter of his own songs, Michael Sellin has been an active part of the Berlin singer-songwriter scene since 1997 .

Sellin's texts are found in a field of tension between fine irony, inappropriate social criticism and sometimes tongue-in-cheek melancholy. His complex compositions contain elements from blues, chanson , tango , bossa nova , jazz and folk .
