The German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation e. V. is a non-profit association based in Munich , which was founded by the Spanish tenor José Carreras in 1995 to combat leukemia.

Overall organization

The association is part of the overall organization of José Carreras against leukemia, which also foundations in Spain ( "Fundación Internacional José Carreras para la lucha contra la leucemia"), USA ( "The Friends of José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation") and Switzerland maintains . The foundations were set up with a common goal, as José Carreras put it: "Our goal is clear: Leukemia must become curable - always and for everyone!". Because of his services to leukemia research, to which the association made a significant contribution, José Carreras received worldwide recognition and the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his social commitment .

Fundraising and association work

In the run-up to Christmas, the José Carreras Benefit Gala takes place regularly in Leipzig , in which prominent artists, orchestras , bands and people affected by leukemia, the latter also in small films, appear and ask for a donation to support leukemia research. The first gala event took place on December 22nd, 1995 and was broadcast on ARD / MDR at prime time . Donations could be submitted by phone during the broadcast. The extraordinarily high income from each shipment as well as other donations are approved as a budget at the annual general meeting of the Leukemia Foundation Association. Then, with the help of a high-ranking project committee of internationally renowned doctors and scientists, it is decided which projects should be funded. The scientists, the board of directors of the association and the members provide their knowledge and work on a voluntary basis. In the office of the association in Munich full-time employees worked.

Since 2008 there have been many activities in favor of the association around the Volksbank-Münster-Marathon , which presents itself as the "marathon of the heart". In its investigation from November 2014, Stiftung Warentest put the work of donation organizations under the microscope, in which the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation was also tested.

The goals of the association are: to promote clinical research on leukemia; Improving treatment options, particularly bone marrow transplantation ; Optimization of clinical equipment; Caring for patients and their social environment during treatment; Support of self-help groups, parents' initiatives and small projects at clinics. Bone marrow transplantation is currently the only cure for leukemia. But it is not completely harmless. Therefore your risk should be improved and u. a. the bone marrow donor file will be expanded.

history

In 1987 Carreras developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia . Despite poor prognoses regarding the course of his illness, he was cured of the disease. On July 14th, 1988 he founded the Spanish José Carreras Leukemia Foundation. In 1990 the North American and Swiss José Carreras Leukemia Foundation followed with a benefit concert by the “ Three TenorsPlácido Domingo , Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras in Rome . In 1991 the Spanish bone marrow donor center was established. In November 1995 the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation was established. The first, successful, benefit gala by José Carreras in Leipzig was broadcast on German television in December of the same year. Since then, it has taken place every year in the run-up to Christmas.

Use of the funds

From 1995 onwards, the foundation collected over 200 million euros. It prepares an annual report. The association is voluntarily examined by independent auditors. According to the company's own information, 85.88% of the donations went directly to projects against leukemia in 2002, while the indirect costs ( personnel expenses , depreciation , room costs , costs for public relations and other operating expenses) were 14.12%. Since the association was founded, the Leukemia Foundation has funded more than 500 projects. The leukemia funds used from 1995 to 2005 break down as follows: 63% for research, 28% for structural measures, 7% for information and 2% for social services.

The José Carreras transplant unit of the LMU in Munich, the José Carreras day clinic of the Charité in Berlin and the José Carreras transplant unit of the Leipzig University Hospital are the best-known funded research and treatment facilities.
