Bone marrow donor file

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A bone marrow donor file records the characteristics of possible donors of stem cells in the form of a bone marrow donation or stem cell apheresis . These are the HLA characteristics (leukocyte antigens), which should be as consistent as possible. Treatment with stem cells is part of life-saving treatment for patients with certain types of leukemia . There are at least 40 such files in Germany. Central registers should coordinate the files.

Files

The largest donor database in Germany with around 2.4 million entries has the German Bone Marrow Donor File (DKMS), founded in 1991 , the Stefan Morsch Foundation has 400,000 data records, the German Stem Cell Donor File (DSD) has 100,000 registered donors. The data sets from around 40 files in Germany are forwarded to the Central Bone Marrow Donor Register Germany , which has more than 4 million data sets. A potential donor must contact one of the individual files in order to be accepted.

In Austria there are six donation centers at the Univ. Clinic Vienna, at the LKH Graz, Innsbruck and Salzburg as well as at the blood bank Wels-Grieskirchen and the blood center Linz. The data sets are forwarded to the Austrian stem cell register. The stem cell register has been part of Gesundheit Österreich GmbH since 2015 .

In Switzerland there is the Swiss Blood Stem Cell Foundation .

Many national registers are connected to the international networks European Marrow Donor Information System and Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide . At the beginning of 2011, around 15 million donors from 50 nations were recorded worldwide. There was a jump of 2 million records in 2011 with a file with 2 million donor data from Brazil.
