Helga Brauer (born May 2, 1936 in Leipzig ; † June 15, 1991 there ) was one of the most successful pop singers in the GDR .

Life

After completing her training as a dental technician, chance helped Helga Brauer start her singing career in the summer of 1954: while on vacation in Sellin on Rügen, she took part in a singing competition with the Helmut Opel orchestra. She won first prize - and Opel immediately offered the 18-year-old a contract as the orchestra's accompanist.

On November 11, 1954, Helga Brauer made her first public appearance in Leipzig's exhibition hall 2, followed by other appearances and guest performances with the Helmut Opel orchestra and others. a. in Switzerland. In March 1956 she passed a “microphone test” on the radio of the GDR and appeared a little later for the first time with the Leipzig Radio Orchestra , then under the direction of Kurt Henkels . The first radio recordings followed in the same year, and the Amiga record company also offered a six-month training contract in the summer of 1956. This was followed by an exclusive contract in 1957 and the recording of the first single.

A year later, Helga Brauer achieved the first number one hit in the GDR pop rankings with “Today, Constantine Plays the Piano”. In 1959 she was chosen to popularize the fashion dance Lipsi with “Today all young people dance” , and for “Mister Brown from USA” - also a Lipsi - she received the golden note at the dance music festival of the same name in the same year .

In 1960 Helga Brauer married the composer, arranger and trumpeter Walter Eichenberg , who took over the leadership of the Leipzig Radio Orchestra in 1961 and also numerous successful titles for the singer, such as "Hear my heart", "The diary of beautiful Max", "With the brightest smile of the World ”and“ One is there for the other ”wrote.

Helga Brauer went on tours abroad in the 1960s a. a. to the Soviet Union, the ČSSR, Hungary, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Egypt. In 1966 she won the GDR's first hit competition with “Sleep, My Little Johnny” . In the 70s and 80s the singer was not only a guest in the major entertainment shows on GDR television such as “Amiga-Cocktail”, “ Ein Kessel Buntes ” or “ There is music in it ”, but also on numerous stages.
