Stoppok (* 21st February 1956 in Hamburg ) is a German singer-songwriter , multi-instrumentalist and rock - musicians . Due to his humorous nature he received the German Cabaret Award 2015 in the category "Chanson / Lied / Music". His best-known works include the songs Dumpfbacke (1993), Tanz (Move your heart to the brain) , Cool by chance and Learning by Burning .

biography

Stoppok grew up in Essen . An application to the Folkwang University was unsuccessful. From the age of 18 he traveled through Europe as a street musician for three years. His musical roots are in folk rock . Around 1980 he was a key member of the “Stender Band” with ex- Steeleye Span drummer Nigel Pegrum. Since 1982 he has performed solo or with the band “Stoppok”, which was founded in the same year. He wrote his first German-language song in 1978. In the early 1980s he lived in Augsburg. From 1990 to 1999 he was under contract with Chlodwig Musik and Sony / Epic, before starting the record and publishing company “La-La-Land.” In 2000 with his manager Ute-Elke Schneider and Christof Stein-Schneider from Fury in the Slaughterhouse “Founded. Since then his records have been released under the new label "Grundsound". In 1996 he provided the soundtrack for the Sönke Wortmann film Das Superweib . He again contributed the soundtrack to the 2002 film What Doesn't Fit Is Made To Fit . In 2011 and 2014, Stoppok set texts by the Indian writer Tagore to music together with the Indian band “You & I” . Because of his wife, he has lived in Hamburg for several years. In July 2016, he announced the release of his 17th studio album in September 2016. The album Operation 17 got on the best list 1-2017 of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in February 2017 . In 2020 the album Jubel was released . In December 2019 the pre-single Lass sie rein was released .

Stoppok's musical direction can be described as a mixture of folk, blues and rock. The mixture is occasionally provided with reggae, funk or West Coast elements. In addition to his guitar playing, his German song texts and transitions in a “brash” voice are characteristic. His own texts or texts that are sometimes written in coproduction with Bernie Conrads or Danny Dziuk are characterized by both everyday satire and thoughtfulness. On stage he shows u. a. an intimate interaction with Reggie, his bassist .

Stoppok and conspecifics

Every year, Stoppok invites different musicians from different countries to hold a concert evening with them under the title “Stoppok and conspecifics”. The concert series has existed since 2008 and traditionally takes place in Landsberg am Lech in Bavaria , and in 2014 for the first time in Worpswede . The number of participating musicians varies from ten to fifty. Sometimes he only performed with female accompaniment.
