As an autodidact , he taught himself the first chords and licks, based on Jimi Hendrix , McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra , Cream , Free and Traffic . An encounter with a GI brought Spielman into the circle of American musicians, who gave him professional access to the instrument in numerous jam sessions.

In the 80s he started his own band projects, followed by stays in New York City and Boston as well as tours and appearances with the Little River Band , Steve Marriott , Dave Stewart , the Chick Corea Electric Band , Bob Geldof , the Climax Blues Band , Johnny Guitar Watson and many others.

After releasing his solo albums Skin & Wire (1991), Solution (1994) and Electric Sonnet (1996), Spielman moved from Schweinfurt to Berlin in 1999 to take on new musical challenges. Three more solo albums came out before founding the Ron Spielman Trio in 2007 with Edward Maclean on bass and Benny Greb on drums. Two albums were created in this formation: Absolutely Live (2008) and Electric Tales (2012).

Between 2008 and 2014 Spielman was regularly seen on Sat. 1 breakfast television , where he performed live as musical director with Tommy Emmanuel , Jamie Oliver , Beth Hart and Bootsy Collins, among others .

His tenth album to date, Swimming in the Dark , was released in 2013 . In 2016 Spielman formed a new band called Spielman In Bad Company , with whom he released the album Sweet Songs For the Dying a year later . In 2018, Tip of My Tongue was released, a purely instrumental album, on which Spielman reinterpreted songs from his last four solo albums. In 2019 the seven-song live EP called "The Rehearsal Sessions" followed.
