Jamie Oliver (2014)

James "Jamie" Trevor Oliver , MBE (born May 27, 1975 in Clavering , Essex ) is a British chef , television chef , restaurateur and cookbook writer . His nickname The Naked Chef goes back to his first cooking show and stands for the simplicity of the ingredients and preparation of his recipes.

Life

Oliver grew up in Clavering, a small village in Essex about 20 miles south of Cambridge . There he worked in his father's pub , The Cricketers , in the kitchen. After secondary school he went to London , where he learned to cook at Westminster College as part of a school-based home economics course . A short time later he worked in the Neal Street Restaurant of Gennaro Contaldo . Tim Mälzer , who later became the German television chef, was one of his work colleagues . He was discovered for television while working at the River Café restaurant . He later worked at Monte’s restaurant while shooting commercials and his shows like The Naked Chef . In October 2003 Oliver was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire .

In 1989 Oliver founded the rock band Scarlet Division together with Leigh Haggerwood , in which he still plays drums today.

His restaurant chain Jamie's Italian with 25 locations in the UK and 1,300 employees filed for bankruptcy in 2019 . An equal number of Jamie's Italian restaurants abroad that are operated under license were not affected.

He has been married to Juliette "Jools" Norton since June 2000; the two have three daughters and two sons.

social commitment

Oliver's first television show, The Naked Chef , which was produced from 1999 to 2001, was an instant international hit. As a result, he increasingly devoted himself to social issues: for example, in 2002 he opened his restaurant Fifteen in London on the Jamie's Kitchen program , which offers unemployed and socially disadvantaged young people the opportunity to learn to cook and work in the catering trade . There are now more restaurants in Amsterdam and Newquay .

Another campaign in 2005 was the Feed me better campaign , on television under the title Jamie's School Dinners , to improve the quality of food in school canteens. The accompanying television series on Channel 4 showed the situation in Great Britain's school kitchens , which is dominated by fast food and the need to save, and Oliver's attempt to offer nutritious, healthy menus to school children. Oliver collected 241,000 signatures from various schools in England. In the course of the campaign, the Labor government promised to provide an additional £ 280 million .

In Ministry of Food he tried in 2008, the inhabitants of Rotherham ( Yorkshire ) cooking with fresh ingredients and healthy diet almost bring. For this he taught recipes to a small group of residents; this in turn should pass on the recipes to neighbors, colleagues and friends in a cooking event. The idea for the broadcast comes from the time of the Second World War: The British Ministry of Food had distributed recipes to the population in this way when food was rationed.

"I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity."

"I hope you will help create strong, lasting exercise so that every child can have nutrition lessons, families can be encouraged to cook again, and people everywhere can be helped fight obesity."
