Fairuz ( Arabic فيروز, DMG Fairūz , often also Fairouz ; born on November 20, 1934 in Beirut , Lebanon as Nuhad Haddad  /نهاد حداد / Nuhād Ḥaddād ) is a Lebanese singer and has also appeared in many films and plays. Your stage name Fairuz means turquoise in German . She is considered one of the most important Arab singers and representative of a united Lebanese nation.

Life

She moved to Beirut with her Christian, Syrian Orthodox family in 1935 , where she grew up in Zokak-al-Blat.

In 1955 she married 'Assy Rahbani and had 4 children: Ziad (* 1956) (musician and composer), Hali (* 1958) (paralyzed from early childhood after meningitis), Layal (1960–1988) and Rima (* 1965) (photographer and director).

Together with the brothers Mansour and 'Assy Rahbani, her future husband, she pioneered a new musical genre in Lebanon that showed western influences and evaded dominant Egyptian models.

Fairuz (around 1970)

Her first major gig was in 1957 and she quickly became a star of Lebanese music. During the Lebanese civil war , she appeared very rarely in public in order not to be abused for political purposes as a Syrian Orthodox Christian . Its popularity has only added to this reluctance, and it has fans across religiously diverse Lebanon as well as across the Arab world.

After the civil war and the death of her husband, she worked with her son Ziad Rahbani ; since then her music shows more and more Latin American influences.

In 1998, Frédéric Mitterrand , the nephew of the former French President and then director of the international French-language channel TV5MONDE , produced a TV documentary about Fairuz (see below) for the series "Music Planet" on arte .

The text and music are from the Rahbani brothers, who also appeared as producers at the same time. Fairuz's best-known partners in the performances were Wadi al Safi , Nasri Shamseddine and William Haswani . English translations are also noted for the original titles because the records and the later CDs also had the English titles as translations.
