Herwig Rudolf Mitteregger (born September 6, 1953 in Mautern in Styria ) is an Austrian drummer, singer, composer and producer.

Youth and education

Herwig Mitteregger was born in Austria, but his family moved to Ratingen at an early age , where he attended the city center high school. After school, he studied drums and piano at the Duisburg Institute of the Folkwang University (today Folkwang University of the Arts ) from 1972 and from 1974 at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg (today Hamburg University of Music and Drama ).

Musical work

In 1976 he joined the Berlin band Lokomotive Kreuzberg as a drummer and percussionist. After their dissolution the following year, he recorded two German-language, internationally successful albums with the Nina Hagen Band in 1978 and 1979 . Since the four musicians (Herwig Mitteregger, Reinhold Heil , Manfred Praeker and Bernhard Potschka ) fell out with the singer Nina Hagen , the contractually agreed second album Unbehagen was initially recorded instrumentally. Then Hagen's singing was recorded in the absence of the musicians.

After the final break with Nina Hagen, the four musicians founded the West Berlin rock band Spliff (synonymous for joint ), in which Mitteregger wrote songs, played drums and sang. Spliff published from 1980 to 1984 four albums, including a rock opera listed The Spliff Radio Show with Alf Klimek , Rik De Lisle and two other singers; also the album 85555 named after its order number , which brought Spliff Germany-wide success and was also published in English. The album Congratulations followed .

Even before the band split up, Mitteregger released his first solo album Kein Mut - kein Mädchen in 1983 , which he composed, written, produced, recorded and sung in. With the band, the soundtrack for the film Baby by Uwe Friesner, the music for Schimanski - Tatort Zweierlei Blut and the fourth album Black on White were recorded. A fifth spliff LP planned for 1986 was discarded due to solo projects; the four members separated after the farewell tour in late 1984, although the split of the band was never officially announced. Since then, Mitteregger, who soon settled in Spain and set up a recording studio there, published five more albums by 1997, on which various musicians played. In 1985 the single was more and more successful.

In the days of Spliff, the multi-instrumentalist had started producing other artists as well. Since 1980 he has been responsible for albums by Ulla Meinecke , Manfred Maurenbrecher , Sternhagel , Michael Fitz and Cosa Rosa and played a major role as a musician.

In 1986, along with numerous other artists, he took the stage free of charge at the Anti-WAAhnsinns Festival against the planned Wackersdorf reprocessing plant . Since 1999, two comeback attempts with Spliff failed in advance.

After 1997 Mitteregger worked mainly as a composer in Spain, performed only rarely in Germany and started a family. In 1999 he became the father of a son. Since 2006 he has lived with his wife and son in Hamburg, where he is again actively working on his own projects.

At the end of May 2008, the album Insolito was released on his own label Manoscrito Music , with which he developed his style from the phase in the mid-1990s. In June 2009 the album Fandango followed , which also contained a new version of the spliff song Emergency Exit. And after eight years, the album Sol Mayor was released in January 2017 .
