Mautern is a market town with 1750 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the center of the Liesingtal in Upper Styria ( Austria ) and is 713 to 1045  m above sea level. A. The municipality is located in the judicial district or district of Leoben .

geography

The municipality includes the following six localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Liesingau (142)
  • Magdwiesen (51)
  • Mautern in Steiermark (1180)
  • Rannach (144)
  • Reitingau (66)

The community consists of the six cadastral communities Eselberg, Liesingau, Magdwiesen, Mautern, Rannach and Reitingau.

Liesingau lies between the towns of Kalwang and Mautern and, after the smaller industrial companies such as wood processing and lemonade production had to close in recent years, is largely agrarian.

history

The earliest written document is from 1145 and reads "apud Mutaren". The name goes back to old high German mutari and means 'at the toll collectors '.

The parish church of St. Nicholas was built between 1170 and 1180. The focal point is the miraculous cross on the high altar . It burned out in the great fire of 1718 so that the heavy crossbars were held vertically by the arms of Christ .

Mautern has had market rights and coats of arms since 1633 . The market fountain and pillory are located on the market square . In the Middle Ages, lawbreakers often had to stand for several days at this stake in the center of the medieval town center .

In 1693 a plague or Marian column was erected in thanks for the well-conquered plague .

Since June 27, 2011, the municipality of Mautern has been part of the " Kleinregion Liesingtal ", which was founded on that day together with the neighboring municipalities of Kammern , Kalwang and Wald am Schoberpaß .

Tourism association

Together with Kalwang, Kammern im Liesingtal, Gaishorn am See and Wald am Schoberpass, the municipality also forms the “ Palten - Liesing Erlebnistäler” tourist association . Its headquarters are in Mautern.
