history

Chichelwanche is first mentioned in 1148 . The name goes back to mhd. Kiche (hut, shed for animals) and mhd. Wang (meadow slope). The settlement was soon a rich town of hammermen and mining. The Kalwang people also took part in the peasant uprising in 1525. The copper mining in the Teichen existed from the beginnings in the Middle Ages until 1867 and after a resumption between 1916 and 1928. The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850 and in 1929 was elevated to a market town. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, Kalwang belonged to the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 the market town was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Kalwang Hospital has existed for over 100 years. The landowner Rudolf von Gutmann built it from 1912 to 1914 for his workers and employees. It has been known as the Kalwang accident hospital for decades .
