The parish church Kalwang is located in the market town of Kalwang in the Leoben district in Styria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to Saint Oswald of Northumbria - incorporated into Admont Abbey - belongs to the dean's office of Leoben in the diocese of Graz-Seckau . The church with the former cemetery and the cemetery wall are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A church was consecrated in 1268. The fortified churchyard wall was erected after the Turkish invasion (1480). In 1595 the church suffered a fire and was then renovated. In 1608 Kalwang was incorporated into its own parish and probably the Admond monastery. In 1742 the choir was rebuilt. 1969/1970 was a restoration.

architecture

The two-bay nave - gothic at its core - beneath a lancing barrel with plaster ridges on strong wall pillars was probably built after the fire in 1595. On both sides of the Langhausostjoch near the choir, almost square side chapels are built on. The north side chapel was donated by Christoph and Anna Springensfeld and shows rich, heavy stucco on the ceiling and the walls with a chronogram from 1697. The south side chapel, probably built at the same time, shows charming baroque stucco around 1740/1750.

The three-bay choir - longer than the nave and in the width of the nave - with a straight end has square vaults on straps on stepped wall pilasters with composite capitals above with entablature. In the vault there are stucco fields, the middle stucco field shows the coat of arms of Abbot Anton von Mainersberg (1718–1751) from 1742.

The mighty four-storey west tower with Gothic sound openings has an eight-sided pointed helmet on triangular gables. The tower hall has a star rib vault.

The sacristy extension at the choir head is slightly drawn in.

Furnishing

The high altar was built around 1700 and shows the high altar sheet of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary and the upper image of Maria Magdalena both around 1740/1750. The tabernacle with plastic jewelry comes from the Stammel workshop.

The cross altar of the north chapel was donated by Christoph and Anna Springensfeld according to the chronogram in 1697 and bears the remarkable figures Barbara and Katharina. The six angels originally belonging to a holy grave were transferred here. The Trinity altar of the south chapel, dated 1701, shows the altarpiece mercy seat with saints, with Francis at the bottom. The altar bears the statue of the risen man with two angels by the sculptor Josef Stammel .

In the choir there are seven other statues by Josef Stammel (1750) of Our Lady with a Poor Soul, Anna with Mary, Joseph with Child Jesus, Leonhard, Florian, Antonius and Benedict and two reliefs Ecce Homo and Christ Carrying the Cross . The sculpture Christ on the scourge column in the tower niche as well as a remarkable Christmas crib with carved figures (1751) in a wall niche are made by Stammel.

The late Gothic crucifix from around 1500 was restored in 1968.

The attractive organ prospect from around 1720/1730 has double doors, painted on the inside with David and Cäcilia, on the outside painted with flowers. Medardus Reig names a bell in 1690.
