The Leoben district is a political district in the state of Styria . It is divided into 16 municipalities , including three cities and eight market communities.

As part of the municipal structural reform 2014/15 , the number of municipalities in the district was reduced from 17 to 16 from January 1, 2015, as Hieflau was incorporated into the municipality of Landl in the Liezen district .

After Walter Kreutzwiesner retired as district captain of Leoben on August 31, 2019, Markus Kraxner took over the interim management of the district administration. On February 27, 2020 Kraxner was appointed by the state government as district captain from March 1, 2020.
