politics
Regional policy
St. Peter-Freienstein is a member of the HerzBergLand community association ( Reitlingblick region ).
On the occasion of the municipal structural reform in Styria 2010–2015 , the municipality held talks with the neighboring municipalities regarding the consolidation of municipalities. The town of Trofaiach (to which Gai and Hafning have also belonged since January 1, 2013), with which it shares the location in the Trofaiach basin and already works together in the HerzBergLand community, came into question, the town of Leoben , with which it connects the voestalpine Donawitz plant (the wire works is located in St.-Peter-Freiensteiner area), or Traboch , which is also a member of the community association and itself saw a merger with Leoben as possible. Ultimately, St.Peter-Freienstein remained an independent municipality.

Industry
In 1817 Andreas Töpper built the second sheet rolling mill in Styria in the Gmeing mine. As early as 1818 he sold this work to his brother-in-law Mathias Jandl , who expanded the work further. In 1834 a representative mansion was built near the sheet metal rolling mill and is still standing today. In 1872 the work came to the Innerberger Main Union and in 1881 to the Austrian Alpine Mining Society . In 1900, Alpine closed the sheet rolling mill and sold it to the German industrialist Carl Cosack , who operated a paper mill on the site for several years.
The currently largest employer in St. Peter-Freienstein is voestalpine Austria Draht . The old name voestalpine Draht Donawitz would suggest that this company is located in the Donawitz district of the neighboring town of Leoben, but it is largely located in the municipality of St. Peter-Freienstein, at the northwest end of the Donawitz iron and steel works.
