The entire longitudinal valley section of the Mur within the Mur-Mürz furrow is called the Upper Murtal . The industrial areas around Leoben , Kapfenberg and Judenburg , which are important for Styria , and the core area of the Lungau in the state of Salzburg are located in this valley .
geography
The valley covers a total of 125 kilometers. The valley area in the true sense of the word is divided on both sides of the Judenburg-Knittelfelder Basin (Aichfeld), with its own landscape, into two parts that are very different in terms of nature and culture.
- The sub-area above the basin (often referred to as the Upper Murtal in the narrower sense) lies entirely within the Central Alps , with the Schladminger Tauern and Murberg mountains to the north and the Gurktal Alps to the south. The uppermost parts belong to Salzburg's Lungau (Tamsweg district), the larger part of this valley section in Styria to the Murau district and the Murtal district (former Judenburg and Knittelfeld districts ).
- In contrast, the Murtal below the Enge von Kraubath forms the border between the Central and Northern Alps ( Gleinalpe and Mürz Valley Alps ) for about two thirds of its length .
Larger settlements within the Upper Mur Valley are Tamsweg , Murau , Judenburg , Zeltweg , Knittelfeld , Leoben and Bruck an der Mur . With a relatively low population density, the upper part is only weakly industrialized, its central areas are the widening in the Tamsweg Basin and the Aichfeld , which do not belong to the valley as a landscape area . The lower valley section is a densely populated industrial agglomeration between Leoben and Bruck .
The town of St. Michael in Upper Styria is an important inner-alpine traffic junction where the transalpine connections via Salzburg, Linz, Vienna, Graz and Villach intersect: at St. Michael / Obstmk. In the Leoben basin the Liesing-Palten-Tal ( Schoberpass ) flows from the Ennstal into the Murtal, at Bruck the Mürz Valley from the Semmeringpass , with the Pyhrnautobahn A9 (in St. Michael directly to Graz through the Bosruckunnel ) and the Semmering expressway S6 over Bruck. The following section of the valley downstream on the Mur is the Mur breakthrough valley ( Middle Mur Valley of Styria) to Graz with the Bruck expressway S35. The Rudolfsbahn , which comes from Selzthal im Ennstal near Teufenbach over the Neumarkter Sattel in the direction of Carinthia, runs accordingly , with the connecting line Leoben - Bruck / Mur to the Südbahn (Vienna - Semmering - Graz) and the connection of the Murtalbahn to Tamsweg. The main road traffic route of the Upper Murtal upstream is the Murtal expressway S36 to Judenburg, from there the Friesacher Straße B317 to Scheifling (over the Perchauer Sattel ), then the Murtal Straße B96. In St. Michael im Lungau the alpine axis crosses the Tauern Pass ( Tauern Autobahn A10). The west from St. Michael / Lg. The upper reaches of the Mur near Muhr is called Oberstes Murtal . Other more important passes to the south are the Obdacher Sattel near Judenburg into Lavanttal, Flattnitzer Höhe and Turracher Höhe into Gurktal, and to the north the Präbichl over Eisenerz and the Triebener Tauern between Judenburg and Trieben in Paltental.
