The Murau district is a political district in the state of Styria and has an area of 1,384.12 km².
With 27,543 inhabitants (2020) it is sparsely populated and is also affected by emigration. The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Murau. The smallest town in Styria is located in the district: Oberwölz . Soft tourism benefits from unspoiled nature. The Murau district has the highest proportion of forest in Austria, mainly because there is little high alpine wasteland and hardly any agricultural land.
Administrative division
Until 2014, the Murau district was divided into 34 municipalities , including two towns and five market communities.
As part of the municipal structural reform in 2014/15 , the number of municipalities in the district decreased significantly. Since January 2015 the district has consisted of the following 14 municipalities:
- Krakow, Mühlen, Murau, Neumarkt in Styria, Niederwölz, Oberwölz, Ranten, Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg, Sankt Lambrecht, Sankt Peter am Kammersberg, Scheifling, Schöder, Stadl-Predlitz, Teufenbach-Katsch.
