Railways

The district of Bruck an der Mur received a railway junction in the middle of the 19th century when the K. k. priv. Austrian Southern Railway Company had a line from Bruck to Leoben branched off from its Vienna - Semmering - Graz line, which was opened in 1844, in 1868.

Bruck station is still an important railway junction for the Austrian Federal Railways today; Express trains to Vienna and Graz stop every hour, to Villach every two hours.

In 1893, the state of Styria started operating a narrow-gauge local railway from Kapfenberg in Thörlbachgraben to Au-Seewiesen. However, the planned continuation did not materialize. It was supposed to connect to the Mariazellerbahn of the "Niederösterreichisch = Styrian Alpine Railway", which was built in the same gauge and had run from St. Pölten in 1907 via Mariazell to the Gußwerk station and was even operated electrically from 1911 onwards.

Another local electric railway was added in 1913; this, the local line Mixnitz – Sankt Erhard , is only used for freight traffic today. The Kapfenberg - Au-Seewiesen and Mariazell - Gußwerk lines were completely closed.

Administrative division
