Oberwölz has been a municipality in the Murau district in Styria since the beginning of 2015 . It emerged as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria from the formerly independent municipalities of Oberwölz Stadt , Oberwölz Umgebung , Schönberg-Lachtal and Winklern bei Oberwölz , with the new municipality also being referred to as the "Stadtgemeinde".

Geographical location
Oberwölz is located north of the Mur Valley in the Wölzertal. The Wölzerbach arises from the confluence of Hintereggerbach and Schöttelbach south of the leisure center and flows into the Mur at Niederwölz . In terms of population, Oberwölz is the smallest town in Styria.

history
In 1007, Emperor Heinrich II donated large parts of the Wölzer and Katschtal valleys to the Bishop of Freising . In the 11th and 12th centuries the area around the castles Rothenfels and Katsch was heavily populated. In 1298 the market in Oberwölz received permission to fortify it with a circular wall. City rights were granted in 1305, and Oberwölz was the center of the Freising Chamber estate.
Population development
Despite the positive birth balance , the population has been decreasing since 1991 because the migration balance is very negative.

Oberwölz city
- Oberwölz city fortifications , the city wall, three city gates and the defense towers are well preserved
- Main square: from the Middle Ages
- Catholic parish church Oberwölz hl. Martin
- Hospital Church (Filialkirche St. Sigismund bei Spital): Built under the Freising Bishop Nicodemus della Scala (1421–1443). According to the inscription under the master builder bust with the name Hans Jersleben, he can be accepted as the builder. After a fire in 1480, the vaulting and the tracery windows were renewed. Remarkable stone carvings on the gallery up to around 1500.
Oberwölz closes
As part of Regionale 12, the city gates were closed for two days on a weekend in June 2012 for a city festival. On Saturdays, those willing to leave were allowed out until midnight, then only emergencies and emergency services were allowed to pass before the gates were reopened on Monday at 3 p.m. under the song Muss i denn, muss i denn out to the Städtele .
The follow-up project was the Kirtag & Nacht , which is held in the city as a Wölzermarkt - typically from 2 p.m. on Saturday - on 10/11. August 2013, on 9/10 August 2014 and on 8./9. August 2015. In 2016 the Wölzermarkt was celebrated only one day on Sunday, August 14 “for organizational reasons”. On August 13th, the MTB Challenge bike race was held under the theme “Oberwölz in motion” from 1 pm and a motocross competition from 5 pm on the main square.

- Rest area of the municipality of Oberwölz Surroundings: Built in 2006 near the lindworm station on the legendary Wölzertal circular hiking trail . The granite blocks of the rest area symbolize the 4 cadastral communities Salchau, Schöttl, Raiming and Hinterburg, the water flowing through them represents their connection.
Economy and Infrastructure
In 2011 there were 36 companies in Oberwölz in the production sector employing 162 people, around half in the construction sector and half in the manufacture of goods. The service sector gave jobs to 351 people in 126 companies, forty percent in social and public services, almost twenty percent each in trade and in accommodation and catering. tourismIn 2018 the municipality had 110,000 overnight stays. One third of the guests were domestic, two thirds were foreigners. More than three quarters of the guests come in winter. In the months of April and November there were fewer than a thousand overnight stays, the months of July and August brought a small off-season with 7000 and 8000 overnight stays. |

In the municipality there is a kindergarten, an elementary school and a new middle school .

A general practitioner is available to provide medical care for the population. A retirement and nursing home offers care for fifty people.
