Pusterwald is a municipality with 436 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Murtal district in Styria .

geography

The municipality is located in the Wölzer Tauern of the Niedere Tauern and extends vertically from 951 to 2363  m above sea level. A. ( Hohenwart ).

Community structure

The community consists of the only cadastral community and village of Pusterwald.

The community is located in the judicial district of Judenburg .

Neighboring communities are, starting in the north in a clockwise direction: Bretstein , Sankt Oswald-Möderbrugg , Oberzeiring , Schönberg-Lachtal , Oberwölz Umgebung , Donnersbachwald .

history

Pusterwald was first mentioned in documents in 1318, the valley was first mentioned as Freytal in 1294 .

The current church was built in 1430.

Lords were among others the Counts of Montfort . Between 1589 and 1738 Pusterwald belonged to the von Herberstein rulers and formed its own office. In 1849/1850 the political community Pusterwald was established.

In 1934, seven-year-old Viktor Heinisser was murdered by robbery. The perpetrator from Pusterwald was arrested soon afterwards, sentenced to death and executed on January 4, 1935 in the courtyard of the Leoben district court.

In 2000 Pusterwald was voted the most beautiful flower village in Styria and in 2003 the most beautiful mountain flower village.

Population development

According to the 2001 census, the municipality had 572 inhabitants. 92.7% of the population had Austrian citizenship. 92.1% of the population professed to the Roman Catholic Church , 3.1% to the Evangelical Church , and 1.9% were without religious beliefs.

The decline in the number of inhabitants since 1981 is caused by a negative balance of migration, the birth balance is positive.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2010 there were 59 agricultural and forestry holdings, 31 of which were the main occupation, these cultivated two thirds of the 5700 hectares. The manufacturing sector employed seven workers in two factories. In the service sector, 16 companies gave 23 people work (as of 2011).

Together with Pölstal and Pöls-Oberkurzheim, the municipality forms the “Region Pölstal” tourism association . Its seat is the municipality of Pölstal.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality by the Styrian state government on May 1, 1974. The description reads: In a shield divided from silver to green, three green spruce trees standing next to each other, below an adjoining silver rafter.

  • Fridolin von Freythall (1832–1903) has edited the Pusterwald legend of the Bruckenbauer Lex literary in the novella “Das Hochgericht vom Birkachwald” .
  • Günther Schwab (1904-2006) the Austrian writer, narrator and essayist, but also screenplay and radio play author, worked as a forest manager in Pusterwald. Among other things, he wrote the autobiographical key novel Die people von Arauli (1976), which deals with his time in Pusterwald from 1936 to 1945.
