Eppenstein is a former municipality with 1224 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2013) in the Murtal district in Styria . The place is in the judicial district Judenburg . Since 2015, Eppenstein has been merged with the communities Weißkirchen in Steiermark , Maria Buch-Feistritz and Reisstraße as part of the Styrian community structural reform , the new community continues the name Weißkirchen in Steiermark.

Geographical location
Eppenstein is located north of the Obdacher saddle in the narrow valley of the Granitzenbach , an important connection from the Carinthian Lavanttal to the Styrian Murtal .
Neighboring communities were clockwise from the north until 2014: Reifling , Maria Buch-Feistritz , Weißkirchen in Steiermark , Reisstrasse , Amering and Sankt Wolfgang-Kienberg .

history
Mühldorf was first mentioned in a document in 1482. The iron processing in Kathal, which was mentioned in 1305 as the Kateyl, was of national importance. In the 15th century there were two hammers in Eppenstein. In the 18th century, the products, scythes and sickles were sold as far as Central Germany, Switzerland and Transylvania. The iron industry then declined in the 19th century. Today there is still a tool forge in town, the Kathalschmiede.
The municipality of Eppenstein was created on January 1, 1965 through the amalgamation of the municipalities Schwarzenbach am Grössing and Schoberegg with parts (KG Mühldorf) of the - thereby dissolved - municipality Allersdorf near Judenburg. The name chosen was that of the old margrave and ducal family of the Eppensteiner .
population
According to the 2001 census, the municipality had 1,371 inhabitants. 98.0% of the population had Austrian citizenship. 92.9% committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 0.6% to the Evangelical Church and 4.4% were without religious belief.
The best-known Eppensteiner is the ski racer Renate Götschl .
Culture and sights
The castle ruins of Eppenstein are located on a rock above the village , and in the Middle Ages the seat of the Eppensteiners , including the Carinthian Duke Heinrich III.
Economy and Infrastructure
According to the 2001 census of workplaces , there were 35 workplaces with 183 employees in the municipality as well as 428 out-commuters and 109 in-commuters. There were 111 agricultural and forestry holdings (62 of which were main occupations), which together farmed 4,437 hectares (1999).
The access to traffic is via Obdacher Straße B 78. In Eppenstein there is also a stop for the Lavant Valley Railway .
There is a kindergarten in Eppenstein and an elementary school in Kathal.

The municipal council consisted of 15 members and, since the municipal council election in 2010, has consisted of mandates from the following parties:
