The municipality emerged as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria from the municipalities of Sankt Marein bei Knittelfeld and Feistritz bei Knittelfeld, which were dissolved at the end of 2014 .

Both previous municipalities had a municipality coat of arms. Due to the amalgamation of municipalities, these lost their official validity on January 1st, 2015.

The new award of the municipal coat of arms for the merged municipality took place with effect from March 10, 2017.
The new blazon reads:

"In the silver head of the shield above three red notches on the lower edge, three red disks, each with a gothic diamond leaf growing, underneath a blue stake in silver, representing a growing gothic tracery window, the openings of which are perforated in gold, accompanied by a blue one at the front Ploughshare, behind a blue water jug. "
