Sankt Marein bei Knittelfeld is a former municipality with 1248 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2013) in the Murtal district and the judicial district of Judenburg in Styria . On January 1, 2015, it was merged with the municipality of Feistritz near Knittelfeld as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform . The new community bears the name Sankt Marein-Feistritz .

Sankt Marein bei Knittelfeld is located in Styria not far from the confluence of the Leissingbach and the Mur .

history
The place was part of the Mark Steiermark , created in 1122 , which was separated from Bavaria as the Duchy of Styria in 1180 . Sankt Marein is also the ancestral seat of the old noble family of those von Pranckh , which had its ancestral seat at Prankh Castle in Prankh. The Augustinian Canons' Monastery, founded here in 1140 , was moved to Seckau as early as 1142 . From 1192 the area was ruled by the Babenbergs in personal union between Austria and Styria. From 1282 to 1918 the area was under the rule of the Habsburgs . The political community of St. Marein was established in 1849/50.
On November 6, 1918, Sankt Marein near Knittelfeld came to the Republic of German-Austria as part of Styria. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the place became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.
Culture and sights
- Parish church
- A two-aisled hall church in an elevated position, which was built in the middle of the 15th century. In 1480 the church was looted and damaged by the Turks. The Anna Chapel, which was probably donated in 1364, is still preserved from the previous building and serves as a sacristy. Furthermore, parts of the north and west walls as well as the tower basement are from the previous building.
