history

It is assumed that Celts lived in the municipality before the birth of Christ and were active as gold prospectors. Under Emperor Augustus , the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum became part of the Roman Empire and Feistritz adopted Roman culture. From this time two Roman stones were found in Feistritz, which were later walled up in the church in Feistritz. It is said that a church was built in the early days of Roman Christianization , which sank in the Fentscher Moos. At the time of the Great Migration , Slavs settled the place and it was named Feistritz or Fuistrica , as the place name is first documented at the end of the 11th century. The name goes back to the original Slavic * Bystrica (torrent, stream with clear water). Feistritz was later settled by Germans who brought their Christian priests with them from Salzburg or Bavaria. In 1075 there should have been two churches in Mareinerboden.

In 1849/50 the political community Feistritz was established.

politics

The last mayor in Feistritz was Peter Ring, who had been in office since the sudden death of the then mayor and elementary school director Heinz Schmied in 1998.

In the local council elections in 2005 , the SPÖ Feistritz achieved a profit of 67.79%, a profit of 14.58% and was thus able to win an additional mandate and a total of six mandates. The ÖVP got three mandates with 32.21% and lost 8.66% of the votes.

After the municipal council elections on March 21, 2010, nothing changed in the distribution of seats, the SPÖ gained 22 votes (but lost 0.21%), the ÖVP 12 votes.

coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from June 1, 1993.
Blazon (coat of arms description): "In a red shield a silver bar with three black notches on the lower edge, above which three black disks are broken, each with a diamond leaf of Gothic shape."

Partner municipality

Feistritz and Sankt Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld have a community partnership with the Italian city of Grado . There are annual excursions there and representatives from Grado also visit the two places regularly. Feistritz and St. Lorenzen also bring a Christmas tree to Grado every year, which decorates the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia there at Christmas time . Although the partnership charter was only officially signed on November 29, 2003, the contact and friendship between the congregations dates back to 1989.

economy

Feistritz is rather insignificant for the economy of the area, but there are some self-marketers (especially in the agricultural sector) and a few commercial enterprises (steel and aluminum construction Schweiger, car dealership Vogl & Schubert, car dealership Grasser, warehouse ...). Teerag-Asdag (a Porr subsidiary ) also operates an asphalt mixing plant in Feistritz.

education

There is an elementary school and a kindergarten in Feistritz.

  • The elementary school was opened on November 4, 1899 and after renovation work in the 1970s and 1990s, it got its current appearance.
  • There has been a kindergarten in Feistritz since 1975, which was initially housed on the first floor of the former municipal office and has been in the building of the last municipal office since 1986.

Events

Notable events in Feistritz are above all the village festival and "Jugend Musiziert", where mainly children and young people from Feistritz and the surrounding communities perform.

Relatively unique in Austria is the Demolition Rally , which has been organized every year since 2001 by the "Motorsport Club Dietrich". After the organizers were accused of causing massive environmental damage after the event in July 2007, the fate of the rally was uncertain. After the change of management, the Demolition Rally could take place again on July 12, 2008. The organizers emphasized that they would strictly control all requirements. An application for the next four years has already been submitted.
