Sankt Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld is a former municipality with 803 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2013) in the Murtal district and judicial district Judenburg in Styria . As part of the Styrian community structural reform , it has been merged with the communities of Rachau and Sankt Margarethen near Knittelfeld since January 1, 2015 . The new municipality carries on the name Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld. The basis for this was the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act (StGsrG).

Geographical location

Sankt Lorenzen is located in the Murtal about six kilometers northeast of Knittelfeld . The municipal area lies to the right of the Mur , which forms the municipal boundary over long stretches of the valley floor, and stretches along the Preggraben onto the slopes of the Gleinalpe .

The Murtal was already an important transport route in Roman times. This is why objects from Roman times were found in the area of ​​Sankt Lorenzen. Of particular note is a larger silver coin find from the time of the soldier emperors (coins from 222 to 268 AD), which was found in 1837 during construction work in the Preggraben.

Listah (Leistach) was first mentioned in a document from 1047. The fate of the area was determined for centuries by the two monasteries of Admont and Seckau . The political community of St. Lorenzen was established in 1849/50.

Sauerbrunn springs were used from the late 19th century. However, the facilities fell into disrepair after the Second World War.

According to the 2012 census, the community had 803 inhabitants. 97.0% of the population had Austrian citizenship. 92.7% of the population professed to the Roman Catholic Church, 1.1% to the Evangelical Church, and 5.1% were without religious belief.

politics

The municipal council, which was dissolved on December 31, 2014, consisted of nine members and, since the municipal council election in 2010, has consisted of mandataries from the following parties:

  • 1 SPÖ

The last mayor was Hubert Wolfsberger (Independent Citizen List).

Partner municipality

St. Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld and Feistritz bei Knittelfeld maintain a community partnership with the Italian city of Grado . There are annual trips there and representatives from Grado also visit the two communities regularly. Feistritz and St. Lorenzen also bring a Christmas tree to Grado every year, which decorates the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia there at Christmas time . Although the partnership charter was only officially signed on November 29, 2003, the contact and friendship between the congregations dates back to 1989.

Economy and Infrastructure

According to the 2001 census of workplaces , there were 32 workplaces with 230 employees in the municipality as well as 231 out-commuters and 153 in-commuters. There were 56 agricultural and forestry holdings (29 of which were the main occupation), which together farmed 4,869 hectares (1999).

The hard stone works in Preg and the operation of the Kies-Union are of economic importance.

There is a kindergarten and a primary school in the former community.

The traffic development takes place via the Pregerstraße L 553. The Murtal expressway S 36 runs directly north of the municipality. The Fentsch-St. Train station is also in the area. Lorenzen on a section of the Rudolfsbahn .
