Rachau is a former municipality with 612 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2013) in the Murtal district and judicial district Judenburg in Styria ( Austria ).

Geographical location

Rachau is on the edge of the Styrian Aichfeld

Community structure

The municipality comprised the following three localities (population in brackets as of October 31, 2011):

  • Glein (158)
  • Mitterbach (145)
  • Rachau (304)

The community consisted of the four cadastral communities Glein, Mitterbach, Rachau I and Rachau II.

Parish consolidation

As part of the structural reform of the Styrian community , Rachau has merged with the communities of Sankt Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld and Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld since January 1, 2015 , the new community continues the name of Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld. The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG.

The political community of Rachau was established in 1849/50.

The main attraction of the community is the treetop hiking trail in Mitterbach.

In Rachau is the Wipfelwanderweg , the km 2.7 length, partly larch wooden walkways and stairs in treetop height, leading through a forest.

  • From 1995 to 2004 the so-called hill climbing took place on the Teufelsberg in Rachau.
  • The traditional Steirerball of the rural youth takes place every year on December 26th.

politics

The mayor was Karl Hirtler of the ÖVP until the dissolution of the municipality on December 31, 2014 , while Bernadette Hartleb (ÖVP) was the deputy mayor.

The municipal council , which was dissolved on December 31, 2014, was composed as follows after the municipal council elections in 2010:

6 ÖVP , and 3 SPÖ .
