history

The Bretsteingraben was called Finsterpöls in the Middle Ages (first documented mention in 1245). The name Bretstein was first mentioned in 1310. The name is derived from the name for steeply towering rocks, board stone .

Bretstein came to the Archbishop of Salzburg in 860, but was only cleared and settled in the 11th and 12th centuries. Important landlords were the Liechtensteiners and the Eppensteiners. The church of St. Katharina and St. Ulrich has been secured since 1343, since 1545 only more than St. Katharina. Supervised by the vicar of Sankt Oswald bei Zeiring since the 12th century, a sub-vicariate was not set up in Bretstein until 1765, giving the place its own pastor for the first time. The Bretstein parish was founded in 1849/50.

During the time of National Socialism , there was the Bretstein subcamp in the Bretsteingraben , a satellite camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp . In April 2003, a memorial was opened on the camp site, which is looked after by the Bretstein subcamp association.
